90 years ago today, George Formby recorded ‘When I’m Cleaning Windows’ at our home in Studio Two 🎶 The song went on to become one of Formby’s biggest hits, selling 100,000 copies within its first few months. Its risqué lyrics initially saw it kept off the BBC until it was reportedly brought back into favour after becoming a favourite of the Royal Family. The recording also marks an early chapter in our history of comedy recordings. Pictured alongside Formby is Oscar Preuss, then head of A&R at Parlophone Records. When Preuss retired in 1955, he handed the reins to George Martin, who would go on to produce some of the great comedy records of the late ’50s and ’60s, including work with Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan and Morecambe and Wise.
