"As the Deer" was written in 1981 by Martin Nystrom while he was a 24-year-old student at the Christ for the Nations Institute in Dallas, Texas. Depressed after a difficult breakup and facing ministry burnout, a friend challenged Nystrom to do a 19-day, water-only fast to reconnect with God. On the nineteenth day of the fast, Nystrom sat down at a dormitory piano, feeling broken. He noticed his Bible lying open to Psalm 42. Looking at the opening verse "As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God" he began to spontaneously play chords and sing the scripture. Although he didn't initially intend to sing the song publicly, a friend shared it at the institute, and it quickly gained immense popularity. The lyrics—"You alone are my heart's desire, and I long to worship You"—reflect the deep, desperate thirst for God's presence during a season of heartbreak and spiritual exhaustion. When her husband, Pastor Walter Martin, considered canceling a preaching engagement to care for her, their young son asked if God would take care of her while he preached. Civilla Martin was severely ill in New York, and her husband intended to cancel his service to take care of her. Their young son (often cited as around 9 or 10 years old) asked his father, "Do you not believe that if God wants you to preach today He will take care of mother while you are away?". Inspired by this, Civilla wrote the lyrics on a Sunday afternoon while her husband was preaching. Upon returning home, Walter Martin was so moved by the poem that he immediately composed the music on a small organ. The hymn was published in 1905 in the book Songs of Redemption and Praise.
