Please don’t prune your hydrangeas this fall until you know which type you have! Pruning at the wrong time could mean cutting off next year’s blooms. Here’s how to tell what your hydrangeas need right now. #HydrangeaCare #GardenTips #FallGardening #NewJerseyGardening #BastBrothers

PANICLE + SMOOTH We wouldn’t recommend actually pruning panicle/smooth hydrangeas yet just because they can tolerate fall pruning. This is their time to age to beautiful shades of pink & burgundy, depending on the variety that you planted. Panicle hydrangeas like Limelight and smooth hydrangeas like Incrediball bloom on new wood. So when the time comes in late winter/early spring, we're not worried about preserving this year's stems for next year's flower buds. ✂️ PRUNE LATER Panicle / Paniculata Smooth / Arborescens Late winter → early spring BIGLEAF + MOUNTAIN + OAKLEAF First: if you have a bigleaf, mountain or oakleaf hydrangea — do not prune it right now. These bloom primarily on old wood, which means next year's flowers are already being set on these stems. Cut them now and you could literally be cutting off next summer's blooms. If it’s an Endless Summer big leaf hydrangea that blooms on old & new wood, you can deadhead spent blooms by cutting right under the bloom, but do not give the stem a deep cut. In essence, just don’t do it. Preserving that old wood gives you the best shot at the earliest flush of flowers next year. Deadheading is the exception Now, can you deadhead? Yes. If these brown flowers are driving you crazy, you can snip the flower head off without reshaping the entire plant. But honestly? You can also leave them. I love the dried blooms for fall and winter interest. 🚫 DON'T TOUCH Bigleaf / Macrophylla Mountain / Serrata Oakleaf / Quercifolia So remember: old wood = hands off. New wood = prune later. And if you don't know which hydrangea you have? Don't prune it. It’s technically still summer… but this window box was ready for a fall refresh 🍂 We’re not quite ready for cold-hardy blooms, so we are transitioning into the season with echinacea, coral bells, and ornamental peppers. And when you’re working with a tiny window box? Sometimes you just have to shove it in and make it work! 😂 Once those nights get cooler, we’ll swap the peppers for cabbage and take this box fully into fall!
