I spent a lot of my 20s feeling behind. It’s hard not to when you look around and people your age are graduating, starting careers, getting married, buying homes… and you’re still trying to figure out things they got to figure out years ago. For a long time, I looked at the years I spent as a refugee, losing my dad at 15, helping raise my siblings, missing school and starting over in Canada as time that was taken from me. And honestly, some of it was. Reframing it doesn’t make those years less painful or make me grateful they happened. It just reminds me that while I thought my life was on pause, I was still growing up. Just in a very different way. I’m 27 now. I’m still in school. I’m still figuring out my career. I still compare myself to people my age sometimes. But I also get to choose what happens next, which is something younger me would've killed to have. So maybe I’m behind in some ways. That’s okay. I’m trying to get better at measuring my life against where I started instead of where everyone else is. If you’re also in your 20s wondering why everyone seems ahead of you, stick around.
