Blackberries and Washington are basically synonymous in my mind. Do people even buy them from the store here, or do we all just wait for the bushes to explode in late summer? Both of these blackberry species are beautiful. Both are delicious. But one is invasive, and one is native - and knowing the difference matters when we’re managing gardens, forests, and wild spaces. I actually had them backwards for years. The invasive Himalayan blackberry is so prolific and tied to so many childhood memories that I assumed it had to be the native one. It’s not. And fun fact: “Himalayan” blackberry isn’t even from the Himalayas. It’s originally from Armenia. #foraging #berries #blackberry #pnw #forager

Forgot to add...Despite a lifetime of high-level athletic training and a minimally processed, nutrient-dense diet, menopause timing remains largely outside individual control. The existing scientific literature confirms that dietary studies show correlation at best, not direct causation, when it comes to the onset of #menopause #perimenopause #value #pushback #rant

Cathy wasnt evil. Lee wasnt good. #eastofeden In East of Eden, timshel was a luxury reserved exclusively for Adam, Charles, Cal, and Aron. Lee proved that playing "good" within rigid structures only traps you. He surrendered his dreams just to secure a fragile crumb of agency that could be revoked at any moment. Cathy is labeled "bad" because she refused to submit, raging violently against an oppressive system. She committed wrongs, but the society itself was far worse, ruled by an unfair, power-hungry God. Lee was not just good, and Cathy was not just bad. The worldview was fundamentally broken, offering no clean path to agency. The real message was simple: be a good slave or a useful tool. Only white men were granted the privilege to check out and still succeed. #justiceforcathy #movierecommendation #netflix #discussion

Being self-empowered is the only power I am interested in. When we honor ourselves, we can honor others. The more you conform, the less you know yourself, know others, and know what is real versus what is expected. #unlikable #empowerment #thoughts #feminism

I have some thoughts on #RHONY: Sai is that girl! Notice how she consistently checks people and does not check her values at the door; I love that that was confirmed by her makeup artist. #bravo #rant

Whoops, there are actually some interesting studies showing that at a cellular level, male or female muscles are exactly the same. Some experts suggest that this indicates that it is purely lifestyle and culture that dictate a lot of these gendered differences in strength and athletic ability. This actually lines up with my story because I grew up in a household of all women, so I did all the chores and all the moving of furniture and heavy stuff that might have been assigned to men if they had been present. In my neighborhood, all my friends were boys, so I spent my younger years playing with them, riding bikes, going on hikes, and wrestling. When I entered the fight world, I found my physicality to be quite average compared to men of my size with a similar history to me. Was I the biggest? No. Was I the strongest? No, but I was absolutely not the weakest or the smallest among my peers. Look, this isn't supposed to be an attack on identity; this is me sharing my experience to help offer more data, because I saw myself in that study showing that it was lifestyle, rather than hormones or what is between my legs, that determined my athletic ability. #feminism #thoughts #story

Hiding a tampon up the sleeve, saying "yes," and performing through headaches, cramps, and fatigue to avoid "seeming difficult" becomes a baseline standard of abandoning bodily demands and pain. #rant #feminism #menstruation #selfbetrayal #thoughts Also, the teleprompter feature is going to turn my Substack posts into monologues; the gift literally no one asked for.
