David Beckham is suing his fragrance company for $41 MILLION… over petrol stations 😭 For over 20 years, Coty has been responsible for producing and distributing David Beckham fragrances, including colognes like Instinct. But Beckham’s company, DB Ventures, is now accusing Coty of breaching its licensing agreement by allowing his perfumes to be sold through unauthorised retailers, including petrol stations. Coty denies the allegations. What’s interesting is that David Beckham has already signed a new 20-year fragrance deal with Interparfums, which doesn’t officially begin until April 2028. And despite the legal dispute, reported David Beckham fragrance sales actually increased by almost 72% between 2023 and 2025. Can you actually make a cologne that smells like Coca-Cola? 🥤 Coca-Cola has one of the most recognisable smells in the world, with that familiar combination of citrus, warm spices and sweet vanilla. But recreating the smell of Coke as a perfume accord is a little more complicated than just mixing those ingredients together. So I tried recreating that sweet, spicy and almost fizzy Coca-Cola smell using real perfumery ingredients and aroma chemicals. Making your perfume ideas until I hit 100k followers 🇯🇵 For part 3, someone asked me to make a cologne that smells like Japan. I’ve never actually been, so I built the fragrance around the smells and materials I associate with Japan: fresh yuzu citrus, green tea, cypress, cedarwood, clean oud and white musk. The finished cologne came out really fresh and clean, but the green tea completely took over and it ended up smelling a lot more like matcha than I expected. Still one of the coolest parts of learning perfumery is being able to take a place, memory or idea and try to turn it into an actual fragrance. A watermelon and oud perfume from a small independent fragrance house in Wales 🍉 Mystiq Parfums has built a lot of its fragrances around really clear scent ideas, from Rainfall, inspired by the smell of fresh rain, to Blu Muffin, built around a warm blueberry pastry accord. Their newest release, Melon Aoud, takes that same approach in a completely different direction, combining a sweet watermelon fragrance profile with the darker, woody character of oud. Everything is handcrafted in small batches in Wales, and the full-size Mystiq fragrances are still priced under £60, which makes the brand a pretty interesting option if you’re looking for something more unusual than a typical designer perfume. Turning the smell of rain into a perfume 🌧️ Petrichor is the earthy smell that appears when rain hits dry ground. One of the key molecules behind that smell is geosmin, a naturally occurring aroma compound produced by microorganisms in soil and released into the air when raindrops hit the ground. One of the most interesting brands to discover when you start getting into niche perfume 🇨🇦 Zoologist Perfumes is built around a pretty unusual idea: every fragrance takes inspiration from a different animal and the world around it, using scent to recreate the environment, character and atmosphere rather than simply making a perfume that smells like the animal itself. That’s how you end up with fragrances like Zoologist Penguin, Panda, Moth, Squid and Tyrannosaurus Rex, all exploring completely different scent profiles and ideas. Penguin is probably one of the easier places to start, but the collection gets much stranger the deeper you go. Thousands of perfumes could quietly change formula over the next few years. The IFRA 52nd Amendment is expected to be formally published in January 2027, introducing 48 new fragrance ingredient restriction standards and revising another 15. Existing fragrance formulas will then have around 30 months to comply with the new standards. What makes this such a big deal for the perfume industry is how common some of the affected materials are. Ingredients such as Galaxolide, phenethyl alcohol and linalyl acetate appear across modern perfumery, from clean musk effects and rose accords to materials naturally present in bergamot and lavender. This doesn’t mean every affected perfume will suddenly smell completely different, or that these ingredients are all being “banned.” IFRA restrictions generally set new maximum use levels, meaning formulas that exceed those limits may need to be adjusted. How to make a rainy street accord 🌧️ This perfume accord is designed to recreate the smell of a warm street just after it rains - that mix of wet pavement, damp earth, woods and the slightly mineral smell people often associate with petrichor. The formula was created by Alie Kiral and shared on Olfactorian as a wet pavement accord, using a combination of Iso E Super, Exaltolide, Methyl Laitone, Terranol, vanillin and geosmin. Geosmin is especially useful in rain and wet-earth accords because even tiny amounts can create that distinctive earthy smell associated with soil after rainfall. Rainy Street Accord formula: Iso E Super - pure - 842.4 parts Exaltolide - 10% - 74.9 parts Methyl Laitone - 10% - 59.3 parts Terranol - 10% - 15.6 parts Vanillin Crystals - 1% - 5.3 parts Geosmin - 1% - 2.5 parts The numbers are in parts, so the formula can be scaled up or down while keeping the same proportions. Making a perfume inspired by the top of a snowy mountain 🏔️🧊 Another follower perfume idea for the series, this time trying to recreate that cold, crisp feeling of standing at the top of a snowy mountain. I built the fragrance around ozonic notes, cedarwood, fir balsam, clean musks, blackcurrant and black pepper to create something fresh, woody and atmospheric. The cedarwood ended up smelling incredible, although getting a perfume to genuinely smell cold and icy is much harder than it sounds. One of the best places I’ve explored in Scotland so far 🏔️ Glencoe in the Scottish Highlands is only around two hours from Glasgow, but it genuinely feels like you’ve driven into a different country. Huge mountains, deer wandering around the valley, Defenders everywhere and some of the most ridiculous scenery in Scotland. We spent the day driving through Glencoe, stopping at different viewpoints, visiting Kingshouse for a venison pie and seeing some of the locations connected to Skyfall and James Bond.
