Half an hour from Beijing there's a street where the whole city eats breakfast, and almost no one outside China has heard of it. Xibeijiao, Tianjin. Eight things worth getting up for: Jianbing guozi — mung bean crepe, one egg, a sheet of fried cracker inside. If yours has lettuce, it isn't from here. Guoba cai — pancake strips in gravy under sesame paste and fermented tofu. You genuinely cannot get this anywhere else. Juanquan — bean curd skin rolled around sprouts and glass noodles, deep fried, and never eaten on its own. It goes inside a flatbread. Miancha — millet porridge under sesame paste. She has stood here since 984 /Dule Temple · China's oldest wooden hall She is sixteen metres of painted clay, and she has stood on this exact spot since the year 984 🛕 This is the Guanyin Pavilion at Dule Temple (独乐寺) in Jizhou — one of the oldest wooden buildings in China, an easy day trip from Beijing or Tianjin.
