Experience the sights, sounds—and yes, smells—of Nancy Rexroth's incredible career at Nancy Rexroth: Secrets of My Power, opening this Friday, October 2! Plus, meet the artist herself this Thursday, October 1, at 6:30 p.m. for CAM Presents: Nancy Rexroth: Secrets of My Power. The event will include a conversation between the artist and Nathaniel Stein, Ph.D., Curator of Photography. The talk will be followed by a book signing with Nancy Rexroth in the Marek Family Commons. This video is an excerpt from "In the Darkroom: Printing a Photograph with Nancy Rexroth", produced by Elizabeth Leitzell in collaboration with Nancy Rexroth and the Cincinnati Art Museum’s Rexroth project team. You can see this video—and others by the same team—in full within the exhibition, or at the link in our bio after the exhibition opens on Friday, October 2, 2026. Nancy Rexroth: Secrets of My Power is a featured exhibition for the 2026 Foto Focus ( @fotofocuscincinnati) Biennial: The Long View. Now in its eighth iteration, the Biennial activates over 70 exhibitions at museums, galleries, universities, and public spaces throughout Greater Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, and Northern Kentucky in October 2026—the largest of its kind in America. In late 18th century Bath, England, there were three things on everyone’s mind: The French and Indian War, the coronation of King George III, and Ann Ford. Meanwhile, young artist and family man Thomas Gainsborough was looking to stand out and attract clients. What better way to do so than creating a larger-than-life portrait of the rebellious musician no one can stop talking about? Make no mistake: Ann Ford (later, Mrs. Phillip Thicknesse), was that girl. At a time when women were only supposed to perform music for family and friends, Ford knew she was meant for the stage. Twice, she booked performances at concert halls only for her father to stop her — with the help of police. The third time, though, she got away with it, earning great reviews and significant notoriety. This is a significant portrait to match. A whopping six-feet-by-four-feet, this work immediately catches the eye. Gainsborough depicted Ford taking up nearly the entire canvas and casually glancing off to the side, making it feel like we are just the latest in a long series of gossips and admirers here to bask. Want to learn more? We have two CAM Look videos on this eye-catching work: You can find the links in our bio! . . . . Thomas Gainsborough (British, 1727-1788), Ann Ford (later Mrs. Philip Thicknesse), 1760, oil on canvas, Bquest of Mary M. Emery, 1927.396 #art #arthistory #bridgerton
