The other day, during my shift, a customer came in and we got to talking like we always do. I asked if he was excited for Pride and he said, “I was celebrating Pride before it even had a name.” He told me he was 82. Then he told me everything. How he moved to New York in his 20s and stepped into a world he didn’t know existed… the mafia-owned bars, secret backrooms, drag queens, older discreet men. The unspoken rules. He told me about the night he left a bar and someone said, “Did you hear about the riot across the street at Stonewall?” It was the spark that lit everything. Then came the marches. And more marches. The joy. The chaos. And then, the dying. The silence. The funerals. His lover, gone. Friends, gone. So many people taken too soon. I tried not to cry in front of him, but something cracked open in me. I thought about how many lives were lived and lost so I could stand here, in this little sex shop I love, selling lube and art and books and just being myself. What it means to be part of something so fragile and so fierce. To laugh in a space that once held so much grief, it bent the air. To work on a boulevard people died for. On a floor people died for. How, during the AIDS crisis, it was said that faces in this shop changed every month because the last ones had died. There was no help. Just us. As I filmed the parade from Circus on Sunday, I thought of them. The lovers. The fighters. The artists. The drag queens and porn stars. The loud ones. The quiet ones. The ones who weren’t scared. The ones who were. The ones we never got to know. The ones who never got to grow old. They were all here. Just like we are right now. Though so much has changed, the fight for liberation is not over. And sometimes the fight looks like glitter and sweat. Sometimes it’s staying alive. Sometimes it’s marching. Sometimes it’s dancing. Or kissing. Or sex. Or letting yourself laugh. Sometimes the fight is just being here in the chaos of the world and daring to love anyway. But keep fighting. Happy Pride. Honor the dead. Fight like hell for the living. And don’t forget to live while you’re at it. 🌈 #HappyPride -Circus Of Books
