When the Crown no longer requires their services, scores of holy war angels roost in the city like common doves. (This is a cropped version, full animation is on my profile!) I wanted to play with a new wing rig, because I really love to animate bird-adjacent things.This character design definitely needed an update as well . Now that I've finished animating Ersatz, I'm trying to apply the skills I learned to full-body motion. I still have a lot to figure out but I'm enjoying the process. My solo-animated indie pilot 'ERSATZ' is currently crowdfunding! Link in bio! - I thought this might be interesting! I started animating in Blender in 2020-2021, but I was just tweening back then. I did know some modelling, but my skill wasn't really there yet, so I did a lot of tricks to animate my drawings. I'd rig puppet pieces and build environments with flat drawings in a 3D space. Eventually, I started to get confident in my actual 3D skills around 2023, when I made the Teras Trials trailer for author Lucien Burr. It still wasn't there yet - and you might be able to tell that the video quality was quite poor. This is because I used to render in AVI instead of PNG. I also made the switch from Cycles to EEVEE around 2024, it just made the animation workflow much, much easier. If i had a bit more resources I think Ersatz could look great in cycles, but I'm happy with how I managed to make it work. My biggest jump in learning was when I started my current project, Ersatz. I definitely think I was out of my depth when I started, but I've since settled into a workflow and I've learned an absolute ton. If you're looking to get better at Blender, you just have to make a lot of projects. Tutorials can be a little dry but if you've got your basics down, then start making stuff! Dressed to resemble the princeling of their brigade, Halting, they stand vigilant over the army's most important strongholds. I always start with a loose sketch of the character, before modelling with placeholder textures. I export these textures to procreate and paint over them before importing them back into Blender. The royal guards are very fun to design, especially because they're distinctly more colourful than the other soldiers. The standard infantry soldiers are nicknamed 'broilers' for comparison. This is a question I get asked semi-frequently, and it's an earnest question so I thought I'd answer it with a little bit of behind the scenes stuff. Ersatz is 3D animated in Blender, with textures drawn in procreate. But if you're looking to do this, you can substitute procreate with an image editing software of your choice, I just use it to give a painterly effect to my models. You can animate cool stuff without any paid software at all! Ersatz is rendered in Blender EEVEE. I do think Cycles would be cool but it's time-consuming and expensive, processing-wise, so I adapted the visual direction to be a little more stylised to compensate. There is some jank in my models because I'm by no means a professional, but it's still so much fun to learn. I personally consider myself a better illustrator than I am a modeller/animator which is why I went for this kind of style, basically supplementing my weaknesses with my strengths. I wouldn't recommend making a whole pilot by yourself (after this I'm defintiely going to focus on smaller projects) but I hope this was an interesting peek into the process. Part 2 of the Ersatz concept art series! This time, featuring some art my friends made, which I turned into models. I had creative freedom in adapting them to 3D, so labels aside, you can tell which concept art I made because I did a lot of fast and loose drawings instead of polished references. All in all, I don't have a huge amount of concept art because I was pretty decisive about what I wanted to do, and time I spent drawing concept art was time I wasn't modelling, texturing, rigging, animating, etc. etc. I also have art of characters that are planned for the world, but can't show up in the pilot because of time constraints. Mannequin animation test. I’ve never animated character acting before, and I wanted to test out a weird effect I came up with, so this was good practice.
