Diving with not one but SEVEN 40ft whale sharks blew my mind! They are the most gentle thing l’ve ever dived with and despite their giant size they are incredibly aware of you their surroundings! 📍CENDERAWASIH BAY, Indonesia ✈️ HOW TO GET THERE We flew via Jakarta from the UK and then onto Manokwari (6 - 8hrs internal flight) where most liveaboards will pick you up. You can also fly from Bali 📅 BEST TIME TO VISIT July to September tend to be the best, but Cenderawasih Bay delivers whale shark sightings all year round. We visited in August and spotted 7 in incredible dive conditions 🌡️ WATER TEMPERATURE: Avg. 30°C (86°F) 🤿 SCUBA DIVE LEVEL Beginner to advanced but you can also snorkel (if you’re joining a liveaboard you will need to be at least an advanced OW diver level) 🦈 ETHICAL & RESPONSIBLE ENCOUNTERS Thankfully, WWF helped create the Cenderawasih code of conduct to protect them: NO chasing, NO touching, NO blocking their path! Lying on its side on the ocean floor is the KT Mawar, an abandoned vessel purposely sunk with the help of some of my dive buddies in 2018, to create an artificial reef in Trou-aux-Biches. 2️⃣EMILY & WATERLILY Dive Level: Beginner👌 Max Depth: 25 metres / 82 feet Type of wreck: 2 Barges Offering the best wreck diving for beginners and it’s great if you’re just looking for a relaxed wreck dive. Resting on the sandy bottom are two old fishing barges sunk in the early 1980s. The two wrecks sit right next to each other, which means you get 2 for the price of 1 and can easily explore both in one dive. 3️⃣ STELLA MARU Dive Level: Intermediate/Advanced 👌👌 Max Depth: 26 metres / 85 feet Type of Wreck: Boat As you descend through the crystal-clear water towards the Stella Maru you will see the Japanese trawler is still remarkably intact, sitting upright on the sandy bottom.
