Here’s how I track metal guitars for my band, @Fools & Sages and what I’ve learned from recording our entire debut album ourselves in a home studio. Rather than just recording the same guitar part over and over, I build the arrangement in layers, with each guitar serving a different purpose. 1. Start with the punch I first track a stripped-back version of the chord voicings. These are usually the most important notes in the chord, and they give the guitar its initial impact without filling up the entire frequency range. 2. Add the full chords I’ll then record the complete voicing as one strum per chord. This gives the guitars their weight and makes the harmony feel much bigger. Playing the single chords stops the voicings from feeling messy when played alongside the layers we just recorded. 3. Layer without the roots I’ll go back to those stripped-back voicings and record them as additional layers, this time removing the root notes. This adds width and texture without simply making the low end louder and muddier. 4. Add octave fuzz I’ll track an octave fuzz layer in mono. The fuzz adds harmonic content and helps the guitars glue together with the bass rather than just competing with it. 5. Create the atmosphere Finally, I’ll record ambient layers, usually quite clean and without modulation, delay or reverb printed into the recording. I’ll use these to lift the choruses away from the verses and make the arrangement feel bigger without just adding more distorted guitars. The biggest thing I’ve learned is that bigger guitars don’t necessarily come from more distortion or more layers — they come from giving each layer a job. This is the approach I used to record our debut album, Between the Stars, entirely ourselves at home. 🎸 You can presave outlet album through the link in our bio #GuitarTips #GuitarRecording #MetalGuitar #RecordingTips #HomeStudio
