Antique is my 54th Philippine province🌀 For this trip, I decided to climb Panay’s highest mountain, Mt. Madjaas, located in Culasi. After spending three days and two nights in the mountains, I decided to extend my stay for another two days to explore the town of Culasi. One of my stops was Mararison Island, the closest island to Culasi, which is only about a 20-minute boat ride away. During my visit, Kuya Randy, my tour guide in Mararison, shared an interesting local legend with me. According to Kuya Randy, Mararison is one of the three children of Madjaas and Kanlaon. The legend goes that both Kanlaon and Baloy courted Madjaas, but she chose Kanlaon. Bitter and heartbroken after being rejected, Baloy became consumed by jealousy and sought the help of an enchantress to curse the family and tear them apart. The three children were eventually separated and, according to the legend, became the three islands off the coast of Culasi: Mararison, Batbatan, and Maningning. Madjaas was left grieving and isolated after losing her family. Legend has it that she wept endlessly for her children, and her tears eventually transformed into the 14 striking waterfalls cascading down the slopes of Mt. Madjaas, waterfalls I had the chance to see for myself. I was the only visitor on Mararison when I went. At the end of the trail, the island opened up to a beautiful stretch of fine white sand, and a scenic coastline. Kuya Randy mentioned that the sandbar becomes much longer during summer. From the majestic presence of Mt. Madjaas to the peaceful shores of Mararison, Antique showed me how much beauty can be found in places that don’t always make it to the usual tourist itinerary. 🏝️Mararison Island 📍Culasi, Province of Antique, Philippines
