Healthcare workers are the hardest hit sector for the rise in burnout. 😮 Burnout in healthcare is real, and the numbers show it: 2 in 5 healthcare workers say their jobs feel unsustainable 41% of physicians reported burnout symptoms last year 80% of healthcare workers say current well-being programs aren't working Burnout jumped 65% year over year, with healthcare hit hardest If you're feeling it, you're not alone, and it's not a personal failure. Some things that can help: Speak up about staffing and workload. Burnout is a system problem, not just a self-care one. #HealthcareBurnout #workplaceburnout #burnoutisreal

When I got on TikTok 7 years ago I had NO CLUE where it would take me. Since then, I’ve lectured to doctors all over the globe about the power of social media in the healthcare space. I think it’s safe to say that social platforms will stay influencing parts of healthcare ongoing. #optometrist #optometrytiktok #tiktokoptometrist

In fact I never talk about over the counter drops or artificial tears at all. My goal is always to get you better at making your own tears. #dryeyedisease #ocularsurfacedisease #meibomianglanddysfunction #dryeyes

Spoiler: steroids are not a long term solution. Dry eye disease is chronic and progressive. We have wonderful medications available, but prior auths are getting bananas and denials make it difficult to get the right meds in the patients’ hands 💔

Check your screentime average. If it is above 4 hours a day, you should consider adding in visual hygiene to keep your eyes healthy. This means every 20 minutes of near screen work, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds to relax your focusing system. I call it “eyeball yoga”. Huge bonus points if you add in a few blink exercises to keep your lid margins clean and tear film pumping. Of course good posture and ergonomics go a long way, too! 🙌

Undiluted tea tree oil around the eyes is a horrible idea! Please don’t do that. There are tons of diluted tea tree oil eyelid products readily available. They work great at keeping the ocular biome regulated. One of the many tools we have to combat demodex 🙌

Intense pulsed light (IPL) works on the pigment in the skin. The chromophores absorb the light energy. This is why we can’t do IPL when have a tan (even spray tan), and why we use special settings for higher Fitzpatrick skin. It is very important to control the settings for proper pigments to make sure the treatment is effective, while minimizing any risk of burning. #iplfordryeye #intensepulselight #ipl

Both IPL (intense pulsed light) and RF (radio frequency) came from the skincare/aesthetic world. IPL targets pigment like hemoglobin and melanin. It is anti-inflammatory, stimulates collagen production, kills demodex, and helps meibomian glands regenerate. RF creates internal heat to melt clogged oil glands open and helps tighten your thin eyelid skin. That is so important for a complete, strong blink for ideal tear film spread. I am so thankful we have these technologies to help this life altering disease. #dryeyedisease #meibomianglanddysfunction #ipl #radiofrequency #intensepulselight

Glaucoma is a progressive condition with very little warning signs to the patient. It’s a “silent” disease that we find incidentally. What typically happens is your eye pressure slowly increases and causes your optic nerve hole to get bigger over time. Thankfully we have so many treatment options, and the earlier you catch it, the more vision we can save!

Many times patients have a large group of multidisciplinary doctors all working together. It’s important to make sure there aren’t “too many chefs in the kitchen” when we have chronic, complex treatment plans. It works best when we communicate about our comanagement.

Human bodies are multidimensional. The eyes never operate in isolation from the whole system. It is similar to weight loss in that you need to look at diet, exercise, life style, stress, and genetic dispositions. When dealing with chronic conditions, the goal is progress over perfection. Oh: and patience!

#stitch with @EdwardIa a recent review of literature revealed that up to 80% of doctors have some level of anxiety/depression/mental health condition they are working through personally, while also caring for patients inside of a broken system. I recently heard that “the healthcare system is doing to doctors what the patriarchy did to women” I feel that in my bones. “Burnout” is skyrocketing, which of course means patient care will suffer. Wha are some possible solutions for this epidemic?

#stitch with @Windzle Be my eyes is the coolest app out there. Not only is it a great (free) resource to help people with visual impairments, it is also such a sweet way to connect with other humans around the world. The volunteers are 10:1, so the calls are infrequent, but such a blessing. 💕

Replying to @Shaunie hypochlorous acid is one of my most recommended things to have on hand in patient care! I also love it and use it myself every day. I also never travel without it!
