Jeff the Land Shark is one of Marvel’s most delightfully absurd yet unexpectedly heartfelt creations—a tiny, amphibious, land-walking shark whose journey from a background gag in a comic to a full-fledged hero and pop-culture icon captures the playful side of Marvel storytelling. First introduced in *West Coast Avengers* (2018) by writer Kelly Thompson and artist Daniele Di Nicuolo, Jeff was originally one of several miniature “land sharks” spawned by B-list villain Brodoc. While most of those creatures met grim fates, Jeff was rescued and adopted by Gwen Poole (better known as Gwenpool), immediately becoming her loyal sidekick and emotional support pet. His full name—Jeffrey the Land Shark—is often used humorously in contrast to his adorably simple behavior: despite being a literal shark with legs, razor-sharp teeth, and the instincts of a predator, Jeff acts almost entirely like a happy puppy. He adores treats, enjoys cuddles, and, perhaps most importantly, radiates unconditional affection for his human and superhuman friends. Over time, Jeff began appearing alongside other Marvel heroes such as Kate Bishop (Hawkeye), Deadpool, and Captain Marvel, with his charm consistently stealing the spotlight. His character is defined by an uncanny ability to be both irresistibly cute and hilariously chaotic—whether he’s chewing on cosmic artifacts, swimming through the air in comic panels, or biting off more than he can chew (literally and figuratively). The character’s growing popularity led Marvel to give him his own ongoing digital series, *It’s Jeff!*, illustrated by Gurihiru and written by Kelly Thompson, where each silent, wordless issue tells a short slice-of-life adventure featuring Jeff’s antics across the Marvel Universe. These comics portray Jeff as a kind of comedic observer—he surfs with Namor, hangs out with heroes like Captain America and Spider-Man, annoys Wolverine, and gets into adorable trouble wherever he goes. The humor lies in his universal appeal; he doesn’t talk or fight in traditional superhero fashion, but he represents pure, unfiltered joy in a world full of cosmic crises and dark storylines. In a sense, Jeff functions as a meta-commentary on the Marvel Universe itself: he’s proof that there’s room for silliness and sincerity even amidst the chaos of multiverses, alien invasions, and godlike beings. His popularity soared so high that Marvel even released official plushies, variant covers, and crossover appearances that solidified him as not just a recurring character, but a fan-favorite mascot in his own right. Jeff’s jump from the comics page to video games came through *Marvel Rivals*, a 2024–2025 hero-based shooter developed by NetEase and Marvel Games. In *Marvel Rivals*, Jeff is no longer just a pet—he’s a playable hero, fully integrated into the roster of fighters alongside iconic names like Iron Man, Storm, and Spider-Man. His in-game persona keeps his adorable charm but grants him real combat prowess. Classified as a *Strategist* (the game’s equivalent of a support/healer role), Jeff balances healing, utility, and crowd control with surprising ferocity. His abilities, though whimsical in presentation, are tactically potent: he can spit healing bubbles to restore allies, dive underground (or under the battlefield floor) to evade damage and regenerate health, and unleash his signature ultimate ability, “It’s Jeff!”, which allows him to swallow both teammates and enemies—healing friends and damaging foes before spitting them out in a burst of water that can turn the tide of battle. The developers cleverly retained his humor, giving him animations and voice cues that emphasize his innocence even when he’s wreaking havoc. Despite being small and cuddly, Jeff has become an unexpectedly dangerous opponent in the game’s meta; players frequently describe him as deceptively powerful, capable of saving entire teams with his healing output or sabotaging enemy formations with his chaotic ultimate. #marvelrivals
