💙 Dobby Terrell 💙 The last month or so, Dobby has been having a decline in health - weight loss, GERD, coughing, IVDD, and most recently, many cutaneous masses arose over the course of 3 weeks. On August 7th, Dobby was unable to keep anything down. After rushing him to work, I confirmed an intestinal obstruction. After discussing with our family, I took him to surgery and unfortunately diagnosed a mass completely invading a portion of his small intestine. Because his cancer had spread, we made the decision to end his suffering. I held him, gave him so many kisses, and rubbed those beautiful ears as we said our final goodbyes here on earth. I know we will see him again one day in Heaven. To the bestest boy, my baby boy, our “first born”, my heart dog… we love you and miss you so much already. 🐾❤️🩹 #dobby #dobbyisfree

That one bad week when the firefighters showed up and said: “when is the last time you worked on a human?” and you reply… “yesterday” 🫠😵💫 That one was a doozy 🥲 But the movies and reality have shown, in the case of an emergency or zombie apocalypse, you want a veterinarian around 😉 #veterinarian #vet #vetmed #emergency

You may not be fighting ghosts or foreign bodies this Halloween, but here’s a few tips to make sure you have an uneventful Halloween with your pets! 🎃👻 🍬 Keep the candy out reach - conditions like pancreatitis, foreign bodies, and toxicities (especially from chocolate, xylitol, and raisins) are very common. 🚪 Watch those doors! Trick-or-treaters coming and going can mean an opportunity for your pet to make an escape. Keep them safely secured! 👻 Costumes should be cute AND comfortable. Make sure your pet can breathe, see, move, and potty normally. And if they hate their costume? Don’t force it. 🕷️ Decorations aren’t toys. Keep electrical cords, lit candles, fake spiderwebs, and small decorations out of curious paws’ reach. 🐈 Don’t forget the stress factor! Strange costumes, loud noises, and constant doorbells can be overwhelming. Give your pet a quiet, safe place to hide if they need a break or reach out to your veterinarian if they need a little trazzy for the night. 🆔 Make sure identification is up to date! A microchip and properly fitted ID tag can make all the difference if your little “ghoul” gets loose. Remember, If your pet gets into something they shouldn’t - don’t wait for the “haunting” to begin. Contact your veterinarian or a pet poison hotline for guidance! #veterinarian #vetmed #vetmedghostbusters #halloween

Let’s hear it for the people who keep veterinary medicine running, keep our patients safe, keep our doctors in line, and somehow know where EVERYTHING is. 😂👏🏼 They pursued schooling to further their knowledge and hone technical skills to help save lives for pay no where near their worth! They’re nurses. They’re patient advocates. They’re problem-solvers. They’re the calm in the chaos, the extra set of hands, the voice of reason, and sometimes the only thing standing between a veterinarian and a complete mental breakdown. But more than anything, they’re an absolutely ESSENTIAL part of the veterinary healthcare team. WE SEE YOU. WE APPRECIATE YOU. AND WE COULDN’T DO THIS WITHOUT YOU. ❤️ However you choose to celebrate, let’s show a vet tech some love this week by saying thank you, helping them fight for title protection, and for better pay! 💕 #vettechweek #Veterinarytechnician #VetMed #veterinarymedicine #vettech

This person was thankfully really nice, but I want to take a sec to talk about why we had to start charging no show fees. First, because we were dealing with A LOT of no shows. We are seeing new patients quite regularly and when we book a time slot for someone, that means another isn’t able to get their pet in at that appointment time. When you no-show for an appointment, that not only hurts the practice, but it has still kept someone else who would’ve shown up from coming in, delaying care for their pet. Secondly, this is nothing new to any medical facility. Because of demand, most medical facilities require a 24hr advance for cancelling or there will be a cancellation fee. This is to help decrease the amount of no shows so that our practice can continue to flow seamlessly and patients be seen as scheduled. Even when an employee had a medical emergency and had to cancel their own scheduled doctor’s appointment 3hr before their appt time, she was still charged because it was less than 24hr notice. And she understood! Yet for some reason, vets are still vilified for operating in a similar fashion. So please understand, we want to meet your pet. You just didn’t show up so we could. #veterinarian #vetmed #vetclinic

Just give them the daggum legitimate preventions 😵💫😵💫 I can’t tell you how many flea infestations and consequences from those infestations I have seen because pets are “indoor only”, “has a coat that prevents parasites”, “lives in a gated community”, or uses “natural” products. (As always, consult with your veterinarian to see which preventative would work best and be safest for your pet.) #veterinarian #vetmed #preventions #fleas #throwbackthursday

Don’t tempt fate 😣 It’s just not worth it. In the south, I recommend year round heartworm prevention because I see too many dogs go into heart failure due to heartworms. Get tested yearly. Stay on prevention. And no, garlic, diatomaceous earth, and peppermint oil is not prevention. 🦟 #veterinarian #vetmed #vetclinic #heartworms #prevention

DON’T PANIC, BUT DON’T WAIT. 🚩 Medications that are perfectly safe for humans can be dangerous — and sometimes even life-threatening — to our pets. And before you think, “Well, it was only one pill…” 🫠 One pill can be a big deal depending on the medication, your pet’s size, and how much they ingested. What to do: • Take the medication away - Prevent your pet from eating any more, and safely secure any remaining pills. • Figure out what they got into - Keep the medication bottle or packaging handy. Note the medication name, strength, how many pills may be missing, and approximately when your pet ingested it. • Call your veterinarian ASAP. Even if your pet seems completely normal, don’t wait for symptoms to appear! Some toxic effects can take time to develop. Your veterinarian can help determine the next steps. • Contact @Pet Poison Helpline. Their veterinary toxicology experts can help assess the risk and guide treatment recommendations. ☎️ 855-764-7661 • DO NOT induce vomiting or try home remedies unless specifically instructed by a veterinary professional. Depending on the medication and your pet’s condition, doing so could make things worse. 🚨 If your pet is having seizures, collapsing, struggling to breathe, or showing other severe symptoms, go directly to an emergency veterinary hospital. Call ahead if possible. And please, PLEASE, don’t wait until your pet starts acting sick to ask for help. Early intervention can make a huge difference! #veterinarian #vetmed #ghostbusters #vetmedghostbusters

Someone got his wittle feelings hurt when I discussed neutering my OWN dog and felt the need to leave some pretty nasty comments 🫠 Behind *most* accounts are real human beings. A person with feelings, a family, a life outside of social media, and probably a whole lot more going on than you know. I can laugh and make fun of myself, take constructive criticism, and have a respectful disagreement. Hell, I can even appreciate a little sass. 😂 But there’s a difference between having an opinion and going out of your way to be cruel. And just because someone puts their life, their work, or their face on the internet doesn’t mean they’ve signed up to be your emotional punching bag. I’m a veterinarian, a mom, a friend, a daughter. I’m a human being. I’m someone who cares deeply about what I do, and while I know that I can laugh off this kind of attack, the next person he attacks (and you know he will) might be extremely hurt by this. I know someone this hateful must be a really sad and unhappy individual. Because being kind doesn’t make you weak and being cruel doesn’t make you bold. So here’s a friendly reminder from your favorite sassy vet: You can disagree without being degrading. You can scroll without leaving a nasty comment. And you can absolutely keep your unsolicited cruelty to yourself. ✌🏼 Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some animals to love and absolutely zero interest in letting a miserable stranger on the internet steal my joy. 🐾💅🏼 #veterinarian #vetmed #trolls

Ghosts: the soul/spirit of 💀 people or animals that is believed to appear to the living, usually as a pale, transparent image. Can be repelled or disrupted by salt, iron, holy water, or better yet contained by your local ghostbuster. Gastroenteritis: the sudden inflammation of a pet's stomach and intestines that causes acute vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. Can often be alleviated by fluid therapy, dietary adjustments, and probiotics, but be sure to always call/visit your veterinarian! 🏥 #veterinarian #ghostbusters #halloween #vetmedghostbusters

Come for me ALL YOU WANT, but I have personally diagnosed way too many dogs and one cat with nutritional dilated cardiomyopathy secondary to a grain-free diet. I always advise against them, unless we can find a true medical reason for them to be on them, and then I have a couple of brands that I recommend for them if it is necessary. And it’s not just the GF, it’s some of the BARF and boutique diets as well. As far as we can tell, the problem is due to the amount of peas and lentils that are used instead to replace the grains. I’ve had a couple patients do well after a diet change (the cat completely recovered!), but it’s just not a risk I would take without discussing with your veterinarian. #veterinarian #vetmed #nutrition #grainfree

The truth is, the typical net profit for small animal veterinary practices is 10-15%. Veterinary medicine is healthcare. But it is also a business. They aren’t mutually exclusive. We don’t expect our human physicians, dentists, pharmacists, etc to apologize for earning an income. Why do we shame veterinarians for earning one?! 😔 Have prices increased over the years? Yes. Everything has (hello gas and groceries!) Do I think some of those costs are exuberant and have priced a lot of people out of receiving veterinary care? Yes (looking at you private equity) Do I work my 🍑 off to try to find the balance between making sure our practice is able to pay our staff and stay afloat, while also offering services at a reasonable rate? Also yes! 🤗 Stating all of this to say - be nice. We know it’s hard. It’s hard for us too. Talk with your vet teams about options like @CareCredit 🐶🐱 and Cherry for financial assistance. And for the love of God, stop getting #frenchies and #doodles if you aren’t prepared to spend a fortune on their care. 😅
