Why don't theatre shows start exactly on time? And what does the theatre bell actually mean? 🔔🎭 From stage managers and actors' places, calls to latecomers, technical delays, and front-of-house procedures, theatre curtain-up is far more complicated than most audiences realise. Let’s talk about the history of the theatre bell, why performances sometimes start a few minutes late, and what is happening backstage while you're still finishing your interval drink. Did you know actors can already be in position before the final bell rings? #Theatre #BackstageLife #TheatreLife

Why does dialogue in a musical sound different from dialogue in a straight play, even before anyone starts singing? Plays and musicals divide storytelling differently. Dialogue, songs, music and even comedy operate on different rhythms, which changes how scenes are written and how characters develop. Once you notice the difference, it becomes surprisingly easy to hear. #MusicalTheatre #Playwriting #Theatre

Cruise ship musicals are MUCH more complicated than I realised. 🚢🎭 Major cruise lines now stage productions including Back to the Future, Hairspray, Mamma Mia! and The Wizard of Oz, sometimes with flying, automation and technology that rivals major theatres on land. But the actors also live onboard, work long contracts, perform shortened versions of shows and are officially members of the ship's crew with maritime safety duties. #MusicalTheatre #CruiseShipJobs #Theatre

Why do characters in plays rarely say hello or goodbye? One of the most useful playwriting principles is “enter late, leave early”: start a scene when something becomes dramatically uncertain, and leave once something meaningful has changed. Good dialogue doesn’t need to sound exactly like real conversation. It needs to do something. #Playwriting #WritingTips #Theatre

Why do we still buy theatre programmes when nearly everything inside them could now live online? Theatre programmes evolved from early playbills and free cast information into collectable souvenirs, advertising space and an important source of secondary income for theatres. And Broadway's famous Playbill works very differently from the programmes we buy in the UK. Do you keep every programme from the shows you see? #TheatreHistory #Theatre #WestEnd

Drama school and a university Drama degree aren’t the same thing… even if both involve three years of studying theatre. Drama school is usually much more vocational and actor-focused, while Theatre Studies and Drama degrees often combine practical work with history, theory, criticism and research. #DramaSchool #TheatreStudies #ActingTraining

How do actors actually research a historical character? Knowing the dates, politics, and major events of a period is useful, but it still doesn’t tell you who the person is. A strong historical character comes from understanding what they watched, read, listened to, inherited from their family, worried about, misunderstood and considered completely normal. Research the period. Then work out how the period reached them. #ActingTips #CharacterDevelopment #Theatre

I've apparently been saying this wrong for YEARS. 🙃 It's IN the West End, but ON Broadway because the West End is an area of London, while Broadway takes its name from a street. So yes, theatre people correcting “on the West End” are technically right. Do they need to be quite so delighted about it? Probably not. And thank you to Derek for the education. The swearing was optional. #WestEnd #Broadway #Theatre

★★★★☆ As You Like It — Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon. Jonathan Groff makes his RSC debut as Rosalind in Daniel Evans’s all-male production. The company is superb, Fisayo Akinade nearly steals the whole thing as Celia, and the Welsh choral score gives Arden a beautiful musical identity. I’m less convinced that every idea around gender, design, and camp belongs to the same production, but it’s funny, generous, and hugely enjoyable. Why do theatre shows have an interval… and why is it usually around 15–20 minutes? The answer involves Ancient Greek choruses, Shakespearean candle maintenance, Victorian productions with FIVE separate breaks, orange sellers, ice cream and, inevitably, theatre bar revenue. The theatre interval was never really “invented”. It evolved over hundreds of years… and its British history may owe rather more to candles than you’d expect. #TheatreHistory #Theatre #MusicalTheatre
