Hard to not feel disappointed in the state of the equestrian community after the comments on my last video (comments currently turned off). A lot of incorrect assumptions being made about me, the owner of this sweet girl, the mare herself. As a reminder, check your attitude and mindset before commenting on social media. Being nasty isnāt a good look. Onto my experience: Iām not looking for made. Iām looking for willing. Day 2 with this mare, and already Iām reminded how quickly horses get written off when they show fear. Fear isnāt defiance. And behavior is always communication. Iāll take slow trust over fast obedience every single time. A beautiful reminder for me to check how I show up during first interactions with a new horse and make a greater effort to connect before placing my expectations on them. #horsebackriding #naturalhorsemanship #libertyhorsemanship #horseconnection #horsetraining #equestrian #thoroughbred

Calling a horse bad is the ultimate COP OUT. š£ Labeling a horseās behavior as ābadā or ādisrespectfulā isnāt insight⦠itās avoidance, lack of education, or just straight up laziness on the part of the handler. š Itās what horse people say when they donāt understand how the horse brain actually works. Horses are prey animals. Their entire nervous system is built around safety and survival⦠not strategy, not manipulation, and definitely not malice. They canāt premeditate or plot revenge or āact outā just to ātest youā. They respond to how they feel in the moment. Bolting, bucking, biting, pawing, rearing⦠those arenāt bad manners. Theyāre communication. Every so-called ābad behaviorā is a message about discomfort, confusion, fear, or pain (physical or otherwise). Punishing the reaction DOES NOT solve the root issueā¦it just teaches the horse that expressing discomfort isnāt safe. Punishing communication is exactly how you end up with a horse whoās āobedientā on the outside but shut down on the inside⦠OR a horse that has to resort to the most extreme measures to express their discomfort, leading to a veryyy dangerous situation for everyone involved. True horsemanship isnāt about controlling behavior. Itās about understanding it. Your horse isnāt being bad. Heās being honest. The real question isnāt āhow do I stop this?ā Itās āwhat is he trying to tell me?ā Whatās something your horse used to do that you see differently now? Itās WILD how much changes once we start listening. conscious horsemanship | ethical horse care | natural horsemanship | connection over control | equestrian | holistic horse care | bad behavior | horse training | liberty | Arabian | thoroughbred mare | warmblood

For years, I couldnāt even talk about horses without breaking down. That dream felt like it had been torn from me again and again⦠finances, a bad riding accident, then motherhood and lack of time, finances again⦠until I just stopped believing it would ever find its way back. So I learned to build a life around my other dreams. I moved to the beach. I started over. I tried to make peace with the ache of wanting something that felt out of reach. And then, quietly but also suddenly, life began to open again. Vela found me. The horse I wasnāt looking for, but somehow needed more than I knew. Sheās been my greatest mirror, my teacher, my reminded of everything I thought Iād lost. Now I walk to the beach in the mornings, float in ocean on random Tuesdays, see Vela in the afternoons, and find myself standing in the very life I used to cry about. To the girl who is still waiting for her turn⦠donāt give up. The dream hasnāt forgotten you. Itās just waiting for the perfect moment to arrive. š«¶š¼ horseback riding | conscious horsemanship | beautiful life | beach life | horse girl | ethical horse care | dream life | equestrian

Itās easy to forget how venerable grooming can feel for a horse⦠especially horses already prone to tension and anxiety. We come in with tools, different scents, pressure. And they just have to stand there and trust us. Sometimes tension isnāt resistance. Itās memory and trauma. When we slow down and listen, the smallest moments (a sigh, a lowered head) start to mean something. Then real communication and trust can begin. Weāve been working at this slowly for a while and most days she will stand calmly for grooming now⦠though we still have days that she feels more uncertain about it and thatās totally okay. What if your horseās behavior, tension, and energy all trace back to their minerals? This šš¼ is what Velaās HTMA revealed, and how her minerals tell the story of her nervous system. 70% (or more!!) of horses have shoulder asymmetry (even the top performers), and contrary to popular belief, asymmetry isnāt just about uneven muscle development. Itās also influenced by: ā structural differences ā habitual posture ā movement patterns This is also why itās not always something that can be totally āfixedā but instead managed through a balanced mix of intervention and support. Interestingly, from my current understanding, asymmetry is prevalent like this only in modern domesticated horses and is not regularly observed in horses living outside of captivity, suggesting asymmetry is a human-created issue. Thoughts?? Iāve been learning all of this in the @Saddlefit4Life Equine Ergonomist course and itās been sooo cool to observe and put into practice what Iām learning with Vela. You can easily check your horse using these 3 quick assessments. Sooo billet straps arenāt just holding on the saddle⦠they can also be used to adjust for your horseās shoulder asymmetry?! šš¤Æ Seriously how did I not know this before?! And if youāre thinking, āthatās cool but my horse doesnāt have uneven shouldersā¦ā statistically, youāre probably incorrect š Different studies measure it in different ways, but gait research in high-performing horses have shown that a large majority of horses (~70% or more) have measurable asymmetries **even when theyāre considered sound** That asymmetry can come from: ā hoof imbalance ā confirmation ā training patterns ā or even just natural sidedness (like people being left handed or right handed) Over time, one shoulder usually ends up smaller and/or weaker than the other. Which can contribute to: ā saddles slipping to one side ā pressure building up unevenly ā horses struggling with circles or leads Hereās where billet straps come in⦠Theyāre actually a simple tool to help the saddle fit your horseās body better (and I genuinely had zero idea!!) Iāll share some easy ways to spot which shoulder is the weaker one on your horse later this week (and once you see it, you canāt unsee it) I canāt be the only one who didnāt know this about billet straps?! Please tell me Iām not alone š I learned this in this (and like 1637469 things about equine anatomy, biomechanics, and saddle fit) in the @Saddlefit4Life Equine Ergonomist course Iām taking right now - Iāve been going through it for a month now and Iām just a third of it because it is just SO MUCH INFO and I am loving every second of it 𤩠#saddlefitting | #thoroughbredmare | natural horsemanship | #billetstraps | #ethicalhorsecare | #conscioushorsemanship | liberty work | equestrian

Replying to @brittanylynnegrah How I taught Vela to park š¦š“ Youāll notice the teaching clips are to the right, but the final results are to the left. Thatās because my Pivo (unsurprisingly š) completely lost us when I was teaching her to the left. The left side is actually the one weāve nearly perfected! The steps summarized: 1 - start with solid hindquarter yields 2 - use a wall/fence to block every direction but the one you want 3 - cue toward the hindquarters but keep the whip above the hind end & reward the tiniest step 4 - be patient with any confusion (attempting to figure out what youāre asking, even when itās not technically ācorrectā is still amazing!! 5 - build consistency (1 step, 2 step, 3 step, etc) 6 - add height 7 - generalize by asking in difference location to teach that this request is always the same, no matter where itās asked Next up: asking her to park from a distance at liberty š We havenāt started it yet but Iām super excited to see how she responds once we do and Iāll definitely share that process too! Do you have any other fun (but also super helpful/practical) tricks youāve taught your horse or what to teach? Vela really loves ātrickā training like this and so do I, so itās definitely something I want to sprinkle into our time together more often! #thoroughbredmare #velanova #naturalhorsemanship #bitlessriding #libertywork

Velaās first ride outside the round pen was such a milestone and honestly a win we were really needing š„ŗ She was more forward, more relaxed, and even (shockingly!!!!) began trotting to the right with ease. As you can see in this video, Iāve been experimenting with varying levels of contact with her. And as Iāve mentioned before, she seemed to rely very heavily on the bit for balance. We will be experimenting with different ways to help her learn to carry herself a bit more (including continuing our pole work during groundwork and soon beginning under saddle). I just ordered a neck rope with handle from @correct_connect_ for myself as I find myself having a tendency to balance on the reins after being out of the saddle again for the past six months and I donāt want to be a hindrance to her at all throughout the process. So Iāll for sure update on how it (hopefully) helps us! What do you guys think? Hereās what it really took to make these DIY cavaletti + ground poles šš¼ š° Total cost (with tax): $430.19 ā±ļø Time: about 18ā20 hours spread over multiple days (with plenty of kid-wrangling breaks so take it as a rough estimate lol) š Supplies we had on hand already: ⢠paint rollers and trays ⢠roller brushes ⢠paint brush ⢠painters tape ⢠resin paper (for drips/splashes) ⢠screws ⢠jack stands + scrap wood to sit poles on š§ Tools we used: ā¢compound miter saw ā¢table saw ā¢drill ā¢hack saw ā¢scale ā¢measuring tape ā¢construction pencil Final verdict: very happy we made them but weāll probably go with wood in the future for the poles because the PVC was more hassle than we bargained for š #DIYarenaequipment | #groundpoles | horse jumps | #cavaletti | horse training | #equestrian | #DIYequestrian

Anyone else feel like theyāre obsessed with their horse while their horse is over there just⦠tolerating them? Asking for a friend š But seriously⦠Itās SO easy for me to feel discouraged when progress feels slow (or at a standstill some days). But the fact that I can take Velaās halter off in the pasture and she doesnāt immediately trot off to her friends (or that she no longer runs when I go to grab her out of the pasture) are things that I felt might never happen when I brought her home a couple of months ago. I donāt think Iāve ever worked with a horse who was this slow and resistant to trust (maybe because Iāve never had mares before?) but every single day is one tiny step forward. Part 2 is 2 š¤ Her cuddliness on this day, omgggg šā¤ļø literally melting my heart She gives so much each time we work together lately, even when sheās uncertain, and I genuinely believe itās because I started rewarded any and all effort, regardless of whether or not itās what Iām looking for. Vela is a horse that is terrified of getting it wrong. You can see it in her eyes with each question I ask her. She doesnāt generally refuse a challenge, and even enjoys them, but at the beginning of something new she is very worried about giving the wrong answer. My first real rides with Vela š« You can see in this video that Velaās default when uncertain under saddle is to back up⦠Not out of resistance, but because she was so hesitant to move forward. Instead of pushing, I chose to reward every single try toward forward. Even just a step. I kept the ride short, the rope loose, and let that be enough. And you can see the results on that in our very next ride 𤩠The next day was already offering more forward with WAY less hesitation. It was such a clear reminder that when I drop my own expectations and focus on keeping the experience positive, she learns faster and feels more confident. This journey with her has been such a beautiful reminder that it isnāt about how much I can get from her⦠itās about building her trust and celebrating the little tries that will eventually turn into something truly beautiful. What if your horses inability to collect consistently has nothing to do with strength or training and everything to do with saddle fit? š Iāve been going through the @saddlefit4life Equine Ergonomist course and having just SO MANY āah-ha!ā moments. The thoracic trapezius, sometimes called āthe handbrake of the horse,ā is the spot that stallions bite during breeding that results in the mareās front legs locking up, her back dropping, and her pelvis rotating. This is THE SAME POINT that the saddle often pinches when saddle fit is poor⦠resulting in the exact same reflex 𤯠Activation of this reflex results in a total inability to engage the core, as I show you in the video with my own body. How often is THIS the real issue in horses that struggle to collect and shift their weight backwards?? So hereās a question for you⦠What saddle fit issues do you think result in pinching of these areas? Any guesses? #saddlefitting #saddlefit #equestrian #collection #horsebackriding | poor saddle fit

Positive reinforcement is an incredibly powerful. It can help rewrite negative associations and turn stressful moments into safe ones. š¤ But itās not a fix-all. If the root cause of a behavior is pain or imbalance, the behavior wonāt change until that is addressed. R+ helps most when weāve taken the time to ask WHY our horse is reacting in the first place. The gut impacts FAR MORE than just digestion, which is we should all be thinking about. š¦ Gut health directly impacts: ⢠nutrient absorption + weight ⢠hoof strength and growth ⢠coat shine + skin condition ⢠hormones and metabolism ⢠immune system function ⢠energy, focus, and performance ⢠mood, stress, and ābehavioralā issues This is why gut support is about so much more than just preventing colic. Itās about supporting the WHOLE horse. Iāve already been prioritizing Velaās health by switching her to a forage-first diet, but I wanted to take it a step further. I couldnāt even touch her head when I first brought her home. If I tried, she would pull away, throw it up, brace, she even pinned her ears a handful of times. Part of it was physical. Her teeth were very overgrown and uncomfortable (which we addressed). But a large portion was also emotional. Lowering the head and letting someone touch the face is deeply vulnerable for horses. And for an anxious, nervous mare like Vela, it just wasnāt an option back then. But now, she ASKS ME to clean her face every grooming session by dropping her head when I bring over a wet wash cloth. She trusts me enough to say āyes,ā while also knowing she can tell me ānot right nowā and Iāll listen. ⨠This is the power of trust-based work with horses ⨠Not the āmake the right thing easy and the wrong thing hardā bs. Not the press-and-release or path-of-least-discomfort training. But slowing down, listening, and showing her that Iāll respect her boundaries until she feels safe. And the result? A horse who willingly offers connection instead of avoiding it. That will always be worth so much more than obedience. connection over control | #conscioushorsemanship | #holistichorsecare | #naturalhorsemanship | equestrian | #trustbasedtraining | liberty | #positivereinforcement | R+

OUR BEST DAY YET THIS WEEK š„¹šāØ Words cannot even describe how exciting I was leaving the barn this day. I wish sooo badly my pivo hadnāt failed to track us because the first half of that square (of course it was the part you canāt see at all) was AMAZING. The focus on her face and the effort she put behind it was so beautiful to watch. First tiny ride in our gifted all purpose @arenasaddles went sooooo well. I have a bitless bridle coming to soon that weāll be using. I think it might be time to start going on actual rides in the next week or two. She is a bit hesitant under saddle but so willing, even in her uncertainty. She defaults to no movement when unsure, which Iāll take any day over bolting. 𤣠This day was followed by our worst day ever, which Iāll also be sharing about. I think itās important to share the highs AND the lows and we had a serious low this week too. Every so-called ābad behaviorā is just communication. Spooking, balking, bolting, refusing to load, being barn-sour or buddy-sour, even biting or bucking. These arenāt random acts of defiance. Theyāre your horse saying: āIām uncomfortable. I donāt understand. I donāt feel safe.ā And when we only focus on ātraining outā behaviors, we fail to address WHY theyāre happening. You can punish a horse for pawing, but if their nervous system is dysregulated, the pawing will just show up in another form. You can strap a gadget on to stop head-tossing but if their back hurts, the pain doesnāt magically go away. And it WILL show up in a more severe way eventually. You can force them onto the trailer (sometimes) but if they load from fear alone, every single trip will be a battle. True partnership comes from *listening* to their communication, NOT silencing the symptom. Because behavior is never the primary problem. The horse world is slowly starting to shift toward this understanding⦠but not nearly fast enough to truly serve our horses. Every time we choose empathy over domination, connection over control, we help push that change forward. š«¶š¼ If this resonates, pass it on. The more we talk about this, the faster things will change for horses everywhere. #consciousequestrian #naturalhorsemanship #adultammy #ethicalhorsecare #holistichorsecare
