The smallest details can make or break an automated process. Part position, timing, sensing, and repeatability all have to work together for the machine to run consistently. A few millimeters matter more than you’d think. #Automation #Robotics #Manufacturing #IndustrialAutomation #Engineering #CustomAutomation

Automation can make a good process faster. But if the process is inconsistent, inefficient, or poorly defined, automation usually makes those problems easier to see. Before we automate, we look at the process itself: • Where are the bottlenecks? • What varies from cycle to cycle? • What creates scrap, downtime, or rework? • What actually needs to be automated? A better process makes for better automation. #betterprocess #automation #cycle

The best automation engineers I’ve seen are rarely sitting at their desks all day. They’re standing next to the machine. -Watching it run. -Making adjustments. -Running it again. -Listening for what doesn’t sound right. Because some of the most important engineering happens after the design leaves the screen. Key takeaways: • Get close to the problem • Test what you designed in the real world • Never be afraid to make an adjustment and try again The difference between a machine that works and one that’s ready for production is usually found in the details. Good engineering gets designed. Great engineering gets tested!

The robot is only one piece of the problem. 🤖 Tiny parts overlap, shift and land in awkward positions. At EV, we work through feeding, grip and placement before building the process around them. Your parts. Your process. Your production targets. That’s where we start when building a custom machine. A machine has to do more than run in our shop. It has to work on your production floor. Have an assembly, testing, or inspection challenge? Let’s talk! #custommachine #tailor-made #assembly #testing #inspection

If the machine has stations, the code should too. Andrew explains why we structure machine code around the physical layoutand keep each part’s data with it as it moves. It makes troubleshooting a lot easier to follow. #Automation #MachineBuilding #ControlsEngineering

Can your manufacturing process be automated? Look at three things: 1. How much pain is the current process causing? 2. Is the production volume high enough? 3. Can the parts be fed, positioned and processed consistently? Even difficult processes may be worth automating when labor, quality problems or production demands are high enough. Engineered Vision can also test high-risk process steps before you invest in the full system. #Automation #Manufacturing #Engineering #FactoryAutomation #MachineVision

An industrial machine vision system begins with a camera built for the production floor. This Keyence VS is an industrial camera built to capture consistent images. It collects light from the part, creates an image and gives the system the information needed to inspect features, catch defects, confirm assembly or guide a robot. In this video, we explain how the camera works and where it fits into an industrial machine vision application.

This is what a custom roller groover looks like in action. ⚙️ Controlled pressure + accurate positioning + repeatable motion = a more consistent finished groove. We build machines around the process—not the other way around. #CustomMachines #Automation #Engineering #Manufacturing #RollerGroover #MachineDesign

The best engineers get curious when you hand them a part they’ve never seen before. Something small. Awkward to grip. Difficult to inspect. And somehow, you need to produce thousands of them consistently. That’s familiar territory at Engineered Vision. The lightbulb moment often comes when a challenge in one industry reminds us of a problem we’ve solved in another. Different part. Different application. Experience we can put to work. Three takeaways from the shop: • Start with what makes the part difficult. • Look beyond your industry for ideas. • Test those ideas against actual production requirements. An unfamiliar part is a good reason to start asking better questions. What’s the part that gives your team the most trouble?

For this vacuum-sealing application, we designed dedicated size-change tooling that allows the machine to accommodate different product formats without rebuilding or manually realigning the process each time. Here is how we approach it: • Engineer repeatable locating features so tooling returns to the correct position • Minimize adjustments that depend on operator judgment • Make change components easy to access, remove, and install • Account for sealing pressure, alignment, and product positioning across every size • Design the tooling around the people who will actually operate and maintain it The main problem may be supporting multiple product sizes. The nano-problems are what determine whether the solution works in production: If frequent size changes are slowing down one of your production processes, we would be happy to look at the application and explain how we would approach it.

For this customer, we built a robotic vision inspection system that removed the need for manual checks and operator judgment. The robot positions the vision equipment where it needs to be, giving the camera the right view of each inspection point without slowing the process. We have learned that reliable vision depends on three things: controlled lighting, repeatable positioning, and a clear definition of what passes and what fails. A good camera helps. The engineering around it determines whether the inspection works on the production floor. #machinevision #engineeredvision

The “best” PLC isn’t always about which platform has the most features. As Lead Controls Engineer Andrew Kirby explains, most major PLC platforms can handle a wide range of automation applications. The real decision often comes down to the customer’s priorities—from maintaining consistency with existing equipment to meeting delivery and support requirements. The right controls platform is the one that fits the application, the plant, and the team responsible for supporting it.

Tyler Brown explains why choosing between AI-powered and traditional vision is all about selecting the right level of risk for your application. The wrong approach can affect: - validation - consistency - long-term system performance. Have a vision application you’re evaluating? Connect with one of our automation engineers to talk it through. Our DMs are regularly checked!

A machine retrofit can look simple on paper, but outdated hardware, missing documentation, unavailable PLC code, and unexpected dependencies can quickly expand the scope. Before making changes, our engineers work to understand: - what the existing controls can support - how the machine was originally designed - how new functionality could affect the rest of the system. When production downtime is limited, careful planning and off-site testing become critical. The biggest rule with older equipment? Expect surprises, and prepare for them. Considering a retrofit? Talk with our team before taking the machine offline.

Part consistency can make or break an automation project. If variation isn’t identified early, even a well-designed machine can struggle. When we understand those inconsistencies upfront, we can design the system to adapt, correct for variation, or inspect parts before defects reach the final product. Not sure if your parts are consistent enough for automation? Reach out to our team, we’ll help you evaluate them! #ManufacturingAutomation #CustomAutomation #Engineering #MachineVision #QualityControl

One of the first questions we hear is, "How much will an automation system cost?" There isn't a single answer. The price depends on the application, the level of automation, and the hardware required. A simple press station might need an actuator, tooling, guarding, controls, an HMI, a PLC, and much more before the first cycle ever runs. Breaking a project into its major components is one of the fastest ways to build a realistic budget and avoid surprises later. In this video, we walk through a simple estimating method we use during early project discussions. What's the biggest cost that caught you by surprise on an automation project?

Inspection is only one part of the process. This custom automation system sorts accepted and rejected parts, records production data for every component, and sends that information directly to the manufacturer’s enterprise system all while multiple operations run in parallel! The result: a fully processed part approximately every nine seconds, with the quality control and traceability required for medical device manufacturing. What could a nine-second cycle time change for your production line? Talk to the Engineered Vision team about your application.

When automation goes down… what happens next? A great system isn’t just about speed and output. It’s about making sure operators can quickly understand issues, troubleshoot problems, and get production moving again. That’s why we design automation with uptime in mind. #Automation #Manufacturing #Robotics #Engineering #FactoryAutomation

Think robots are replacing people? Not exactly. The best automation eliminates repetitive, high-risk tasks so skilled operators can focus on higher-value work, all while improving quality, throughput, and traceability. This is what modern manufacturing looks like.
