Proprioception is your body’s ability to recognize pressure, force, and where your limbs are located. Same concept as a weighted blanket, writing without tearing the paper, and touching your nose with your eyes closed. 1. Imagining a line in the air that’s following where you/your prop move lets you visualize your flow into abstract patterns and can help you motor plan the next paths to take it to. Conceptualized proprioception. 2. When you look at yourself indirectly, your brain will have to compensate by using proprioception to sense the position of your body in motion. 3. Closing your eyes entirely will require not only even more intense proprioception, but also increased vestibular and interoception input and processing. 4. Switching the weight or size of your prop will make you brain recalibrate to the shift, activating proprioception. 5. Alerting the amount of force from the lightest touch to a controlled shove will sharpen both your gross and fine motor coordination. Why proprioception? Physical: Improved dexterity, gross and fine motor coordination including bilateral, body and position awareness, true brain and body exercise Sensory Processing: activates the somatosensory system and returns you from “out of body” feelings like panic attacks. For ADHD, Autism, AuDHD and SPD: helps manage sensory over-responsivity, sensory under-responsivity, seeking/avoiding and passive/active approaches. Mental/Emotional: helps with stress and anxiety, grounding, a distraction/coping skill I’ve been both an Occupational Therapist and a Flow Artist for over a decade and love exploring the overlap between the two.
