Trail riding Frida at 17.3hh is basically equal parts beautiful, exhilarating and ducking for my life. 😂🌲 She felt so good out there with her big trot, huge canter, lots of suspension and then when I leaned left under one of the bigger branches, she casually gave me the most beautiful clean flying change. I was not expecting it, but it was SO fun to feel. A chilly fall weekend with Frida, and honestly, these are the days I love most. 🤍 Riding, grooming, neck stretches, groundwork, laughing and just getting to spend time with her. She was such a good, level-headed girl this weekend and I’m so proud of how much confidence she continues to gain. I also basically lived in my @ororo Heated Apparel heated jacket through all of it. With temps around 40°, the three heat settings were perfect for going from standing around to actually working and the 13 hour battery lasted me all weekend without needing a recharge. Big girl adventures, here we come! 🥹🖤 After everything Frida has been through, being able to load her up and take her places feels like such a huge milestone. We officially have our own truck and trailer, and I couldn’t be more excited for the adventures ahead! I was patient waiting for the right trailer to come along because finding something tall enough AND long enough for a 17.3-hand girl wasn’t exactly easy! 😂 And even when we finally found the one, we still had to make a little adjustment to the chest bar. Such a good weekend with Frida. 🤍 She just keeps getting stronger, steadier, and more balanced, and it was so helpful to actually see myself ride on video again too. There’s always so much I can improve in my own position and aids, and I love being able to watch things back, notice the little details and take that homework into the next ride. And then we got to end the weekend out on the trails with @noellefloyd She was so kind to show us some of the trails near the barn and Frida absolutely loved being out in nature. Getting to walk, trot, and canter her out there felt like such a fun reminder of how important variety is for both of us. A little look at one of Frida’s exercise days with Melissa. 🤍 Because of her neck history and arthritis, we’re really intentional about keeping her moving, building strength, and varying her work in ways that support her comfort. This day included pole work, body control, subtle aids, and then a trip to the water treadmill. These are all pieces that help her stay strong, balanced, and engaged without doing the exact same thing every day. I’m so grateful for how thoughtfully Melissa continues to work with her and I love seeing how much more confident and coordinated Frida keeps becoming. One of those weekends I wish I could bottle up forever. 🤍 Frida felt the best she ever has! More rhythmic, more balanced, more connected, and so responsive to my seat. We got to have fun, let loose on the track, work on new things, and just enjoy each other. It’s hard to explain what it feels like to sit on a horse you once weren’t sure you’d ever ride again and suddenly realize just how far she’s come. This weekend was about so much more than obstacles. We worked on body control, foot placement, confidence, and communication; from moving shoulders and haunches on the ground to navigating water, logs, tires, narrow spaces, rocks and all kinds of sensory challenges. What made me the most proud was watching how Frida processed everything. She would lower her head, investigate, think it through, and then try. Instead of immediately reacting, she stayed curious and worked out where her feet and body needed to be. It was such a good exercise for her brain and honestly for mine too. So much of what we practiced carried directly into the saddle and helped us communicate even better. For months, I drove down this road to Pegasus knowing Frida was exactly where she needed to be. Safe, loved, moving, doing water therapy, rebuilding strength, and surrounded by people who cared for her like she was their own. This road became a place of relief for me during one of the hardest chapters of our lives. And now, I got to ride her down it. This photo shoot was about more than beautiful pictures. Part 2: We headed down the centerline and completed our first test together in a show ring! It wasn’t perfect…we had wiggles in our halts and plenty of baby-horse moments, but also so many great moments! We did it again the next day and even improved our score more! For a 17.3 hand five-year-old who has spent so much of her young life in surgery and rehab instead of gaining normal mileage, this felt huge! Getting here took patience, time, and an incredible team. I’m so grateful for every vet, surgeon, rehab professional, trainer, friend, and family member who helped us reach this moment. After three neck surgeries and nearly a year of rehab, Frida made it to her very first horse show! 🤍 I honestly didn’t feel ready and I thought there was a very real chance we would just school her and scratch. She had so much to take in: a busy warm-up, horses everywhere, a smaller arena, and so many things she had never seen before. Even with all that energy, she actually felt really good underneath me. I was still figuring out how much horse I had that day and how fit she has become. Then, right before we were supposed to go into the ring, she had one last big “woohoo” moment and I came off. 😅 Thankfully, my helmet did exactly what it was supposed to do, the EMTs checked me out, and once I was cleared, I got back on. This weekend definitely didn’t go exactly how I imagined it would, but I came away feeling even more proud of her. I’m still learning Frida and what she needs in a new environment, how much energy she has, how fit she really is now, and how to help her feel her best when everything around her is new. And the best part? The weekend was far from over. There’s something so special about watching your horse experience the world for the first time. 🥹🤍 Frida’s second trip off property and our first time riding in an outdoor dressage court. I brought the lunge line just in case and never needed it. She walked through the woods to the arena, looked at everything with that sweet curiosity of hers, and trusted me when I told her she was okay. We walked, trotted, cantered, rode our smallest circles yet, and I got to feel just how much stronger and more balanced she’s becoming. For eight months, I drove past this track and imagined what it might feel like to trot around it one day on Frida. ✨ Becky Moody Clinic Tips: Give & Retake ✨ One of Becky Moody’s big points at the World Cup was the importance of the give and retake of the reins. She mentioned that in the UK, more and more tests are including them, and she believes they will continue to become increasingly relevant. The goal? You should be able to soften or briefly give the reins without the quality of the gait changing. The horse should stay balanced and in self-carriage, rather than relying on the rider to hold them together.
