My corporate career might be the one that pays the bills, but my 11-year-old niece Layken has absolutely no idea what an HR is. 😂 What she DOES know is that I’m a clothing designer, I have my own fashion brand, and I make my own clothes. She tells all her friends about it, too. 🥹❤️ And honestly, that means more to me than she’ll probably ever realise. Today’s top is the Melissa Wrap Top, made from organic linen and designed by yours truly. I named it after my sister Melissa, who was a teenager in the 90s and early 2000s and ALWAYS wore wrap tops. I love that I get to take a little piece of those memories and turn them into something of my own. 🥹 Paired with my trusty Levi’s and my EOS shoes, which, by the way, are approved! Because us ladies deserve to look cool in heels without absolutely destroying our feet in the process. 😂🙌🏼 Sometimes I think we get so caught up in the careers that pay the bills that we forget about the parts of ourselves that light us up. Someone reminded me of something recently that really stuck with me: You only get what you are willing to accept. And honestly... that applies to so much of life. The way people speak to you. The energy they bring into your space. The access they have to your time, your dreams, and your heart. I used to spend way too much time trying to understand why certain people’s energy felt off. Trying to give the benefit of the doubt. Trying to explain away behaviour that didn’t feel aligned. But sometimes your intuition is telling you something for a reason. You can care about someone and still create distance. You can wish someone well and still remove their access to you. You can love people and still decide they no longer get a front-row seat to your life. I don’t care how we know each other, how long we’ve known each other, or what history we share — if someone consistently shows up with sneaky hater energy, disguised negativity, or celebrates you publicly while tearing you down privately, I’m allowed to choose peace. Boundaries aren’t about punishing people. They’re about protecting yourself. And honestly... the older I get, the more I realise protecting my energy is one of the kindest things I can do for myself and the people who genuinely love and support me. Over the weekend, Maru and I were both on the receiving end of unnecessary comments about our appearance. His hair. My outfit. The irony is that we could have easily fired back with comments of our own. We didn't. Not because we couldn't, but because we know how unnecessary and unkind it is. What struck me wasn't the comments themselves, but who they came from. Not anonymous strangers online. Not people who dislike us. Two women who would likely consider themselves kind, nurturing mothers. It's always interesting how quickly some people recognise bullying when it's happening to their children, yet fail to recognise it when it's coming from their own mouths. A reminder to myself as much as anyone else: if you have nothing kind to say, keep it to yourself. Sometimes it's ugly crying on neighbouring treatment tables and then wandering along the beach trying to make sense of why your soul feels ten kilos lighter. What a gift.
