Watching self-tapes late at night, and then it happens 🎬 Somewhere in the middle of the stack, someone walks into the frame, and I just know. That’s our person. I can’t put it on a checklist; it’s not only the lines they say or their look, but it’s also this feeling that they already are the character, and the tape is just proof. That said, my favorite part is what comes next, sending it to the director and getting back “yes, that’s them.” Best text in the world 🥹 Every casting I am chasing this feeling! Self-tapes or live virtual audition must haves: 👇🏼 1.) You must have a clean backdrop/background. You do not want ANYTHING to distract from your audition! Blue or gray doesn’t matter use the color that compliments your skin tone 👍🏼 2.) Lighting is Key! As a casing director, I HAVE to be able to see you. If you want to use natural lighting, make sure the window is in FRONT of you and not behind! You can also use a ring light or soft box light. No I don’t care if there are rings in your eyes (just take a small step back as your probably just too close) 💡 3.) Make sure you are filming at eye-level. Looking up your nose is not flattering for anyone. Use boxes/books to prop your device up or use a tripod 👀 4.) 99.9% of the time, self-tape auditions will be filmed horizontally! I know we are so used to filming vertically for social media but when it comes to self-tapes, think HORIZONTAL ↔️ You really don’t need a mic. Remember that rejection is a normal part of the process, and it will typically take between 10-15 “no”s before you receive that magic yes! While it would be simply AMAZING to land every single role you audition for, it’s not a realistic expectation to set, and you’ll be left feeling drained and defeated if you set a goal that’s statistically not attainable. So rather than focusing on rejection as a negative, reframe it as part of the process that brings you one step closer to the YES! Let’s start a positivity train by dropping some affirmations on success and self-worth into the comments! Small resume? I don’t freak, I then will take a look at your training! As a casting director, my favorite classes to see are 🔹Character development 🔹Script analysis 🔹Scene study 🔹Commercial improv 🔹Comedy improv These types of classes show me while you might not have a ton of credits yet you are training and trying to pursue this. Here are just a few ways casting is really on your side! 1. Let’s say you mess up in your audition and we restart. That clip is deleted, no one ever sees it. I only show your best work. 2. If you have unprofessional clips on your acting profile (bad lighting, audio, formatting), I will hide those from the client. 3. I advocate for auditioning local talent instead of always defaulting to just casting in LA or NY. 4. I will review past castings for similar roles and see who got callbacks or who stood out but maybe didn’t book. 5. When I find the final commercial spot I will send it to talent. I know how hard it is to find footage. We are all independent contractors, so it’s extremely rare for the producer to send me the final copy. It’s typically me searching the internet and YouTube. 6. I often push back on what the client wants to see in auditions, such as limiting how many scenes/pages for the first round. Limiting the number of improv situations, making sure you don’t have to really buy the product etc The list goes on and on. Here me when I say this, CASTING is on your side! I was at a networking event when an actor walked up to me and, within 60 seconds asked me to evaluate their career. 😅 I get it. You finally have a casting director right in front of you and you don’t want to waste it. But here’s what nobody tells you, the best thing you can do in that moment has nothing to do with your reel. Talk about yourself like a person. Your interests. Your hobbies. Something that has nothing to do with acting. Hot take from your friendly casting director: Auditions are NOT feedback sessions, and that’s okay. At a callback we don’t get exact reasons why someone is cast or not. We *do* have a discussion with the director and team. That doesn’t mean they trudge through a pro and con list for each and every actor. Typically, the top selects stand out from the callback session and we narrow down from there. My job is to see your choices and find the right fit within the world we are casting for. Hot take 🔥: Actors should want backdrops to stay indstury standard for self-tapes 👏🏼 Let’s be honest for a second… Do you really want to lose a role because someone else has a prettier kitchen than you? A more aesthetic apartment? No. Absolutely not ❌ Casting should never come down to who has the “cuter” background. It should come down to you, your presence, your choices, your ability to pull us into a moment. Because the most powerful actors? They don’t rely on their environment… They create it 🙌🏼 A simple backdrop levels the playing field. It removes distractions. And it puts the focus exactly where it belongs, on your performance. At the end of the day, casting isn’t looking for your decor skills… We are looking for truth, connection, and someone who can make us feel something through a screen.
