Blindness is a spectrum, and not all blind people see the same thing. When people hear the word “blind,” they often picture someone who sees absolutely nothing or just complete darkness. But that isn’t everyone’s experience! Some blind people see nothing at all. Others may see light, shadows, shapes, colors, blurry images, or have different amounts of usable vision. Some people have peripheral vision, while others have limited or no peripheral vision. And some people have vision that fluctuates. There’s also a difference between being legally blind, visually impaired, and having no light perception. These terms aren’t interchangeable, and blindness can look very different from person to person. For me, I’m completely blind in my right eye, while my left eye has usable vision with glasses. My experience is just one example of what blindness can look like. Blindness doesn’t look one specific way. You can’t always tell how much someone can see just by looking at them.
