Every family deserves time, space and support to grieve. 💗 As Minister responsible for employment rights, I’m proud that we’re introducing a new right to up to two weeks of unpaid bereavement leave for women and their partners who experience pregnancy loss before 24 weeks - giving them time to grieve during one of life’s hardest moments. The first priority I set out in my Hope for Our High Streets campaign was to make our town centres safer. Crime and anti-social behaviour are among the issues residents raise with me most often, particularly in Halifax town centre and Sowerby Bridge. There are some really encouraging signs that the work taking place across Calderdale is making a difference: 📉 Crime has fallen by more than 1,200 offences over the last 12 months ⬇️ Serious violence, robbery and knife crime are all down 👮 Neighbourhood policing teams have increased patrols and community engagement ✅ Calderdale now has the highest overall outcome rate in West Yorkshire, meaning more crimes are leading to positive action against offenders This is real progress and something our police and communities should be proud of. But I also know that statistics only tell part of the story. People need to feel safe as well as be safe. That is why safer high streets remain my first priority and why I will keep working with West Yorkshire Police, local businesses and our communities to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour. Have you ever signed up for a subscription in seconds, only to spend ages trying to cancel it? There are around 155 million active subscriptions in the UK, with an estimated £1.6 billion spent every year on subscriptions people no longer want. That money matters to households in Halifax. As Halifax’s MP and the Minister responsible for consumer protection, I’ve been working to bring forward new rules giving people clearer information, reminders before renewals, and a much simpler way to cancel. Unpaid carers do an extraordinary job, often putting their own careers on hold to care for the people they love. It was fantastic to visit Carers Count Calderdale and hear directly from local carers about the challenges they face balancing work with caring responsibilities. Those conversations are incredibly important because, as Minister for Employment Rights, it's my job to make sure the voices of carers help shape government policy. That's why I'm leading a review of the employment rights available to unpaid carers and parents of seriously ill children. We're looking at whether the current support goes far enough and what more can be done to help people stay in work while caring for a loved one. I'm proud to be leading this work and ensuring the experiences of carers from communities like Halifax are heard in Westminster. If you have lived experience as an unpaid carer, are the parent of a seriously ill child, or are an employer with experience of supporting carers, I'd really encourage you to take part in the consultation.
