A little Earth Day gratitude, even after a rough one. 🌎 Yesterday, as the sun rose over the Blue Ridge, our vineyard manager had already been out for hours. Wind machines spinning, burn barrels glowing, doing everything we could to protect what this land has given us. It wasn’t easy, but it was beautiful in its own way. That’s the thing about farming - Mother Nature always casts a vote. And somehow, even in the hardest moments, we continuously find ourselves grateful for her. For the frost that reminds us nothing worth having comes without a fight. For the sunrise that shows up anyway. For the vines that have weathered many seasons, regardless of what forecast is thrown at us. Virginia wine isn’t made in spite of our climate...it’s made because of it. The cold nights, the humid summers, the late frosts - they press resilience right into every bottle that we and our neighbors produce. This Earth Day, we’re proud to celebrate a significant milestone in our journey toward sustainability here at King Family Vineyards. 🌎🌱 We’re excited to announce the completion of a major solar energy installation over our winery and production facilities, made possible through the incredible partnership and expertise of our friends at Tiger Solar! With over 250 high-efficiency solar panels now in place, this system is designed to generate enough clean electricity to meet 98% of our energy needs. This project marks a step in reducing our dependence on traditional energy sources while continuing our commitment to responsible, sustainable winemaking. To put the impact into perspective, the annual energy output of our new solar system is equivalent to: - The carbon sequestered by 106 acres of U.S. forest. - The electricity used by nearly 17 homes over the course of a year. - The greenhouse gas emissions from driving 270,000 miles in a typical gas-powered vehicle This installation isn’t just about reducing our carbon footprint - it’s about investing in a future where great wine and environmental stewardship go hand-in-hand. Yesterday was a long one for many Virginia winegrowers - one of those nights that quietly blends into sunrise. With an early bud break this year, the risk of frost loomed larger than usual, and when Mother Nature throws a curveball, quick thinking and teamwork are everything. Protecting the delicate young buds that will eventually become the wines you love requires a blend of experience, strategy, and dedication. We’re incredibly grateful for our vineyard team and their deep knowledge, which guided every decision made to safeguard our fruit. To fight off the frost, we turned to a few methods of support. Our wind machines, surrounded by burn barrels, pulled in the heat and pushed it down over the vines. But for vineyard blocks without these machines, we fought from above. Thanks to our skilled friends at HeloAir - a talented pilot flew low over our vines, circulating warm air and offering protection at just the right moment. Thanks to these combined efforts, our losses were minimal for this first frost event of the season. To all of the producers out there navigating frost season - we see you, we salute you, and we’re wishing you strength through these early days of the growing season and beyond.
