Oromay by Behalu Girma is a politically charged historical novel that explores Ethiopiaβs political climate during the Derg era, the EthiopiaβEritrea conflict, and the complicated relationship between power, truth, and conscience. Through its characters and their personal struggles, the novel invites readers to reflect on political responsibility, moral choices, and the consequences of decisions that shape the lives of individuals and entire societies. One of the most striking aspects of the book is its exploration of the tension between personal conscience and political loyalty. The characters must navigate a world where their beliefs, relationships, and sense of responsibility are challenged by the systems they live under. The novel also raises questions about the Derg regime and whether a political system built around retaining power rather than sharing it can ever create lasting stability. What stayed with me most was the question of truth and responsibility. When a writer is also a journalist working within a political system, how much freedom does that person have to tell the truth? And when telling the truth comes with consequences, should silence ever be an option? I believe fiction can sometimes communicate historical truths in ways that journalism cannot. Journalism gives us facts and events, but literature allows us to experience the emotional and moral weight behind them. It helps us understand not only what happened but also how people might have felt, what they struggled with, and the choices they were forced to make. However, fiction also requires us to distinguish between artistic interpretation and historical fact. Another thought the book left me with is how differently generations experience political and social struggles. We cannot fully understand the choices of people who lived in a different time simply by judging them through the comfort of our present. Understanding their circumstances does not mean agreeing with their decisions; it means making room for a deeper understanding of history. Now, reading Oromay at this stage of my life, I realize that my perspective has changed. As a work of literature, I believe the book was worth reading because of its emotional depth, its questions, and its ability to make the reader think beyond the surface of historical events. But when I read it as a form of historical storytelling, it left me with even more difficult questions: Why did Behalu Girma decide to write this book, knowing the risks involved? Was it worth writing and ultimately dying for the truth he believed needed to be told? I also find myself wondering whether the book reflects a sense of guilt in his conscience, or whether Behalu was trying to say, βI am not part of this history,β even though he was deeply connected to it and played a major role in documenting and shaping how it would be remembered. Perhaps he was both a witness and a participant, someone caught between responsibility for the history around him and the desire to distance himself from the decisions and forces that produced it. That tension makes the book even more powerful, but also more painful to read. Ultimately, Oromay reminded me that books do not always need to provide comfortable answers. Sometimes, their greatest value lies in the questions they leave behind. It is a reminder that history is not only about political leaders and major events, but also about ordinary people, personal sacrifices, and the consequences that continue to affect society long after the events have passed.@α αα YTZ thank you for the pic @Mente Libere @Henok Abayneh π @Feben Eliasπ» @20t π #books #reading #ethiopian_tik_tokπͺπΉπͺπΉπͺπΉπͺπΉ #recommendations #habeshatiktok

What can one ordiqnary day in Addis Ababa reveal about an entire society? Bunaye Eskiseken by Betemariam Teshome is an Amharic novel set in Addis Ababa, particularly around the Lemi Kura area. The story follows its protagonist, Bete, through the events of a single day. But beneath this seemingly simple storyline lies a deeper exploration of Ethiopian urban life, relationships, morality, and social expectations. Through everyday conversations, encounters, and decisions, the author invites us to look beyond what people show the world and question who they truly are. Bete is a fascinating character because he challenges our definition of a good person. He can be generous and charming toward others, yet his behavior within his marriage raises questions about his commitment and responsibility. Can someone be kind to strangers but neglect the person closest to them? Does being liked by society automatically make someone a good person? Bete reminds us that public generosity and private responsibility are not the same thing. The novel explores the distance that can develop between spouses when honest communication and emotional commitment are missing. It challenges us to think about whether staying married is the same as being committed to a marriage. It also asks why some people work harder to protect the image of a happy relationship than to address the problems within it. One of the novel's most thought-provoking themes is the contradiction between what people preach and how they behave. People may judge others while making excuses for their own actions. Some may even blame external or spiritual forces instead of accepting responsibility for their choices. The novel encourages us to ask ourselves: Do our values genuinely guide our actions, or do we use them mainly to judge others? The story also invites reflection on the pressure to appear successful in modern urban life. Expensive outings, cafΓ©s, and carefully presented lifestyles can become symbols of status. People may spend beyond their means simply to maintain an image of prosperity. This raises an important question: Are we living our lives according to our needs and values, or are we performing a life that will impress other people? Economic hardship, migration, and urban redevelopment can affect not only people's finances but also their sense of belonging. When neighborhoods disappear, communities may lose more than buildings; they may lose relationships, familiarity, and systems of mutual support. The story encourages us to consider the human cost of social and economic change. The unread letter and unresolved ending add another layer of mystery to the novel. The letter can be interpreted as a symbol of incomplete communication, while the ending leaves readers with questions rather than providing easy answers. But is this ambiguity a literary strength that encourages reflection, or does it leave important parts of the story unresolved? That is one of the most interesting questions to discuss. MY FINAL REFLECTION For me, the strength of Bunaye Eskiseken lies in its ability to turn an ordinary day into a mirror of society. Through Bete's experiences, we are invited to reflect on marriage, morality, social pressure, financial decisions, and the difference between our public image and our private behavior. The novel's humor makes these contradictions entertaining, but the questions it raises are far from simple. Perhaps the most important question is not whether Bete is a good or bad person. It is whether we are willing to examine our own contradictions as carefully as we examine those of others. Because sometimes, the most revealing stories are not about extraordinary people doing extraordinary things. They are about ordinary people revealing who they really are. @α€.α.α° (B.M.T) @nibab & chill @α αα YTZ @Mente Libere @Brightened Soul @Henok Abayneh π @Feben Eliasπ» @BARKOT π¦ #habeshatiktok #EthiopianLiterature #fyp #BookTok #creatorsearchinsights
