“Nobody sees what I’m fighting.” People see the sweat. They see the wet hands. The soaked clothes. The marks under my arms. The gloves that become drenched before I’ve even finished my work. But they don’t see what happens inside my mind. They don’t see me wiping my hands before shaking someone’s hand. Hiding them in my pockets. Wondering if someone noticed. Avoiding certain clothes because I already know what will happen. Feeling embarrassed over something I never chose. I didn’t ask for this. Hyperhidrosis isn’t just “sweating a lot.” Sometimes, it feels like my body is doing something I have no control over—and I’m the one who has to carry the embarrassment. And the hardest part? People can say, “It’s just sweat.” But to me, it has been years of insecurity, frustration, and learning how to live with something I never wanted. I’m a dental therapist student. I’m supposed to focus on the patient, the procedure, the next step. But sometimes, part of my mind is thinking: “Are my gloves too wet?” “Can they feel my hands shaking?” “Did they notice?” Still, I show up. I keep learning. I keep working. I keep putting on those gloves. I keep trying. Because maybe my body does something I can’t control… …but it does not get to decide who I become. So if you have hyperhidrosis too, I want you to know something: You are not dirty. You are not weak. You are not alone. And if nobody has told you this before— you are so much more than the sweat your body produces.
