Crazy to think that a small town girl would end up graduating from Harvard. Even harder to believe that all long, little me was in there the whole time 💛

There’s still time 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ @The RaYnbow Collective #byu #mormon #lds #fyp #pride

@The RaYnbow Collective is at a critical juncture. We need 5-7 very committed individuals to become the new RaYnbow Council. Comment “byu” for the link to apply #byu #mormon #gay #provo #lds

From the 1960’s through the mid 1990’s, @BYU conducted a series of conversion therapy experiments on queer students. Through repeated electroshocks and exposure to pornography, researchers attempted to cure students of their homosexuality. Students who were caught by the honor code and BYU police for “acting on” their queer urges had to choose between staying to finish their degree and undergoing this experiment, or leaving the university without credits or a degree. At least three participants in the study ended their own lives while at BYU, with more suspected but due to poor data collection about suicide in Utah, it is hard to identify where and why students ended their lives in Utah County until more recently. The now president of the LDS church, then head of BYU, Dallin H. Oaks, signed off on these experiments during his time as BYU president. Oaks would go on to craft the church’s anti-lgbtq policies and organize church lawyers to write “The Family Proclimation” to ensure the church wouldn’t be forced to preform gay marriges when Hawaii became the first state to legalize marriage equality. Those who ended their lives at BYU due to the electroshock conversion therapy experiment were never acknowledged, nor has the university apologized for its actions. LGBTQ+ students at BYU are still forced to choose between expulsion or remaining at the cost of their safety. This animation, based off my painting named “Cosmo’s Comsos” pays homage to the queer men and women who ended their lives, to end the pain they were forced to endure to stay at BYU. Cosmo, is the name for BYU’s mascot, and the cosmo flower was associated with gay men in the early 1900’s onward. What strange fruit. #byu #mormon #exmormon #lgbtq #queerhistory @The RaYnbow Collective
