In September 2000, 12 years into our house’s history, we opened our first-ever store in a traditional home in a residential suburb of Tokyo called Ebisu. The store was named Maison Margiela Tokyo. To celebrate 20 years at 2-8-13, our research and documentation initiative Maison Margiela/folders uncovers how this store came to be, and the unconventional creativity that defines it.

Fall Winter 2026: Tapestry. Fall Winter 2026 returned to tapestry. Rigid jacquard tapestry was bonded onto fluid, pre-draped garments before being cut open along the drape lines.

Fall Winter 2026: The Link Bag. The Link bag’s strap references an archival Fall Winter 2001 utilitarian chain necklace covered in silk muslin. The bag evolves this idea through vacuum forming, enveloping the chain in a leather tube. The bag’s shape continues early archival studies of supple and dainty vintage coin purses.

Fall Winter 2026: Fusion. The Fall Winter 2026 collection takes the archival technique of lamination from 2001 and evolves it into Fusion, covering garments in materials like Second Skin jersey, velvet or stocking looking materials. The fusing material extends beyond the garment, creating a border. It’s a trompe l’œil, as the outlines of buttons, lapels, garment details and finishings are visible underneath but cannot be used. Materials and garment construction seem as if merged into one.

Spring Summer 2027 show. A knit long sleeveless top is like two shawls combined: open crochet knit at the front, a more closed stitch at the back, all held by a tie. It’s worn over a second skin top and stockings that are engineered as if they were net stockings. It’s worn with Slide mules.

Spring Summer 2027 show. A leather jacket is given the folded-away button effect, here by cutting the panel and restitching it to create the crease. It can, of course, still be worn buttoned. It’s over a garment-dyed utility waistcoat and a raw-cut crewneck jersey long-sleeve top. The jeans have a long panel cut out and turned upside down on both legs, intentionally making the fading out of place. It’s worn with Heel-less boxer boots and a large 5AC Soft.

Spring Summer 2027 show. A white fluid dress, with a scattered black square pattern, is draped from a hardened front panel which creates a balcony. It sits just above the knee at the front, drapes lower at the back, and is tied at the back to enhance the silhouette. It’s worn with white leather open-toe knee-high Heel-less boots, and a silver chain bracelet covered with metal mesh.

Spring Summer 2027 show. A sculptural satin tailored jacket has its front panels entirely fortified, causing the lapels and collar to curve up and out. There are no buttons, just a tie at the front coming from the inside. The Stockman-cut sleeves, as well as the back, are in the softest satin, and underneath is a second skin top. The stretch black stirrup pants are worn with black Heel-less pumps, and there’s also a Ghost vanity case.

Spring Summer 2027 show Silverware, found in flea markets, has been flattened, including teapots, plates and spoons. It’s then moulded to create a body, held at the back by a tie.

THE MET GALA: Rihanna wears custom Maison Margiela for the 2026 Met Gala. Drawing reference from the Artisanal 2025 collection, the column gown silhouette is founded in the medieval architecture and atmosphere of Flanders, with the constructive drape reflecting the painting of Flemish primitives. Our Artisanal material exploration continues, with the gown crafted from fine copper oscillating duchess woven with recycled computer wire, cloaked around a bodice made of 115,000 found crystal beads, antique jewels, and chains, crafted in over 1,380 hours in our Paris atelier. Styling by Jahleel Weaver

BIANCHETTO: ATELIER EXPERIENCE As part of MaisonMargiela/folders, in Shenzhen we present Bianchetto, our white overpaint technique first introduced in 1989, leaving visible brush strokes and transforming surfaces into a blank canvas. Participants are invited to transform an item from their own wardrobe using the technique, guided by the Maison Margiela Atelier team. Through the act of covering the surface in white paint, the piece is transformed into a house code, completed with our signature four white stitches.
