70 years ago, more than 20,000 women marched through the streets of South Africa to stand up against apartheid and demand their freedom. This week, I had the honour of walking in their footsteps alongside Afghan women who are leading their own fight for freedom today. It’s been five years since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, and banned women and girls from education, work and public life. But Afghan women have never stopped speaking out. I’m grateful to President Ramaphosa for standing with them and supporting their call to recognise gender apartheid as a crime against humanity. It’s an important step toward justice for Afghan women and girls - and toward making sure this never happens anywhere else ✊🏽

Am I getting old?

One of my favorite moments of this trip to Pakistan was spending the evening playing football with girls. Their confidence, teamwork and determination prove that girls belong on the pitch, in the stadium and in every story we tell about who gets to compete. Sports have the power to change the way girls see themselves and the way the world sees women ⚽️

This year, I celebrated my birthday at home in Pakistan 💚 When I won the Nobel Peace Prize, I used the money to buy a plot of land in a remote region of my home country. The surrounding villages had no secondary school for girls and I dreamed of building one. Today Shangla Girls School has more than 1,000 students. In our first graduating class, 22 girls went on to university. These students are proving that education can change lives, families and communities. Pakistan is one of the youngest countries in the world: more than half our population is under 25. This week, I've met talented young people who are starting businesses, creating art, teaching in their communities and speaking up for change. @Malala Fund and our partners support girls’ education projects across Pakistan, and this work gives me great pride and hope for tomorrow. If we invest in girls, I know our future will be bright.
