A marriage of Italian tradition and international grape varieties that helped change the world of Italian fine wine forever. 🍇 THE VINTAGE – 1994 1994 was a challenging and rather uneven vintage in Tuscany, certainly not as celebrated as 1990, 1995 or 1997. How to BEST enjoy a great bottle of wine? Tonight, Pétrus 2006. This is 100% Merlot from Pomerol, grown on Pétrus’ famous blue-clay terroir. At 20 years of age, the 2006 is showing beautifully: black cherry, plum and mulberry, crushed rose petals, earth, mocha and spice, followed by silky tannins and wonderful freshness. Powerful, yet elegant and refined, unmistakably Pétrus. There is also a little piece of history in the bottle: 2006 was the second-to-last vintage vinified by Jean-Claude Berrouet, one of the key figures behind the modern history of Pétrus. For me, enjoying a bottle like this starts with the right wine glass, followed by the right temperature, carefully opening the bottle and, in this case, serving it through a decanter to let the wine fully express itself. Château Palmer 1977, Margaux. 1977 was certainly not one of Bordeaux’s celebrated vintages, which makes this bottle even more fascinating. To my surprise, the wine is showing beautifully elegant, mature and very much alive. The bottle and cork are in perfect condition, so no decanting. At this age, I don’t want to disturb the wine. I’m also choosing a smaller RIEDEL Riesling glass, allowing this delicate mature Bordeaux to express itself without giving it too much air. For me, this is another reminder: never judge a wine only by its vintage. In challenging years, great producers can still make remarkable wines and decades later, provenance and storage become just as important as the year on the label . #hawk #scotland #riedel #goat #pray

There are moments in wine that remind you why we collect, cellar and wait. Tonight was one of those moments. For the very first time, I opened a 1961 Burgundy a Clos de Comte, Nuits-Saint-Georges from Pierre Gourand & Cie, a historic Burgundy négociant that no longer exists. The bottle itself is a true time capsule. The fill level looked disastrous, the cork in shocking good condition, so my expectations were low. But wine has a wonderful habit of humbling us. The result? Absolutely mind-blowing. Incredibly complex, with aromas of truffle, dried rose petals, tea leaves carried by astonishing elegance. Without question, one of the greatest mature Burgundies I have ever tasted. How do you round off an evening like that? By opening a bottle from my father's cellar: 2006 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands Échézeaux Grand Cru. A remarkable Grand Cru from one of Burgundy's greatest domaines, combining the power and depth of Grands Échézeaux with the unmistakable elegance of DRC.Two bottles. Two eras of Burgundy.
