9 years ago, I taught the very first Meisner in Music class. 🗣️ I thought it would help singers with their acting. I never could have expected what else it could do. Since 2017, Meisner in Music has become a space where singers could - sure, become better actors - but also get out of their heads, sing with incredible freedom, rely on their instincts instead of doubt them, and trust inherently that ✨they are enough.✨ 9 years later, I’m still blown away by what we’ve created together.  All of the singers whom we interviewed for this video were so different. But in what each of them said, I heard a common thread: 🪡 🔮 that something magical happens when you stop trying to “get it right” and start truly being where you are now. I am so amazed at Meisner in Music’s growth, excited for its future, and grateful to be doing this work. 🎶 🪄 If you haven’t experienced Meisner in Music yet, I invite you to come see what can happen in your own singing.  🎥 Videography: Alexander Taylor @kaze.at

➡️ The Meisner Technique is, well, a technique. But hear from Sanford Meisner on what it’s really there for: to be used when you need it. Meisner is more about enabling singers to 💫 trust what they already have, 📐 not relying too heavily on rules and regulations. What would be possible in your singing if self-doubt wasn’t making your decisions? So many singers struggle with second-guessing themselves, stifling their performances, 😰 even when they KNOW they can sing better than that. At our workshop this July, learn practical tools to move through the blocks holding you back and reconnect with the joy of making music. The breakthrough you’re looking for might be one conversation, exercise, or perspective away. “Don’t wait for something to fuck up to treat this as a fuck up.” I say to our singers before their end-of-the-semester concert every year. Let me explain: Ever filmed a final, “screw it” take of a self tape… 📲 …only for it to be the best one? Ever seen a performance where something went wrong… 🎙️ …only for the rest of the show to feel relaxed? ✨THIS✨ is the attitude that the Meisner technique trains us to go into performances with. It’s the 🎟️ final moment of a show relief, 🥚 “It’s already broken so I don’t have to be precious with it” thinking, 🤸🏼 nothing to prove energy that makes certain performers so thrilling to watch. It’s the reason that, before every Meisner in Music concert, I do something in front of the crowd to take away the stress from the singers of worrying if they’ll be the most ridiculous-looking person on stage that day. Whether you train with us or not, this mindset is a GAME-CHANGER in one’s ability to be present and have a fulfilling time while performing. Have you ever accidentally had this happen or tried this “fuck it” mentality on to find that a singing performance went extremely well? Let us know! ⬇️ #performance #musicaltheatreperformance #musicaltheatre #concert performancemindset

The most vulnerable instrument (for more reasons than one) 🗣️ Of course many of us want to book work. It can definitely feel great to get praise. But sometimes these external validations of our singing can make us lose sight of just how precious and personal of an instrument we’re dealing with. Your voice is an extension of yourself. ✨ Handle both with care. 💃🏾: @jenneanfarmer 🎶: “Too beautiful for words” from @thecolorpurple by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray 🎹: @kevin.anthony.smith23 #selfexpression #selflove #vocalist

👁️ No, you’re not a bad actor because you can’t “see the snow.” In fact, Meisner believed that the act of TRYING to see the snow was counterproductive! ❄️ The Meisner Technique isn’t about conjuring something that isn’t there. It’s working with what ACTUALLY IS here. This can be seen either as a great relief… or more difficult for us over-achievers. 🙋🏼‍♀️ In today’s clip, hear straight from Sandy on why you can let go of this Sisyphean task. 🪨 Clip is from The Sanford Meisner Masterclass Part II - on Youtube right now for your viewing pleasure! If you try these out, let us know how it feels! 🩵 Expanded definitions in caption. 1️⃣ Keep it simple and specific: when you over-complicate your work, your performances can look convoluted and confusing. 2️⃣ Focus from the outside in: notice and respond to the stimuli that’s ACTUALLY around you, instead of trying to manufacture something to “feel.” Our bodies are hardwired to easily access external stimuli (exteroception), so there’s no need to fight science! 3️⃣ Let yourself get information from the bottom up: when working with a partner, we can’t see inside their brain, we can only observe their behavior. When singing by ourselves, apply that same principle by applying awareness to your physicality over your mentality. What do you think of these concepts? 🤔 Have they worked for you in the past? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🗣️ Andrew Selcke 🎹 @kevin.anthony.smith23 🎼 “It’s A Woman’s Prerogative” from ST.
