Bridging the gap in education access worldwide, Imagine this: you’ve never used a mobile phone, never heard of Google, and the very concept of the Internet is alien to you. It may sound like science fiction, but for an estimated 2.7 billion people, this is their daily reality. This lack of connectivity creates profound barriers, depriving people of opportunities that many of us take for granted—especially when it comes to education. Education is the key to breaking cycles of poverty, empowering individuals, and building stronger societies. Yet, as of today, 263 million children and youth around the world are out of school (source: UNESCO). Many of them live in remote areas where traditional education infrastructure simply doesn’t reach. But what if technology could bridge this gap? A Vision for Universal Education The United Nations has long recognized education as a fundamental right. Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) calls for inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all by 2030. However, the challenge of reaching remote and underserved populations remains a major roadblock. Traditional approaches—such as building schools or deploying teachers—can’t scale fast enough to address the magnitude of the problem. This is where Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites come into play. What Are LEO Satellites? LEO satellites orbit much closer to the Earth’s surface (less than 1,000 kilometers) compared to traditional geostationary satellites, which sit 36,000 kilometers above the planet. Their proximity allows them to provide faster, more reliable Internet connectivity with reduced latency. Unlike geostationary satellites, which remain fixed over one part of the Earth, LEO satellites move in constellations—large networks of satellites circling the globe. This ensures seamless coverage across even the most remote and underserved areas. Recent advancements in satellite technology, coupled with innovations like direct-to-phone connectivity, mean that global Internet coverage is no longer a distant dream. The Case for Education Through Connectivity Access to the Internet unlocks a world of possibilities for learning. It enables remote schooling, provides up-to-date digital resources, and connects students to teachers, mentors, and peers worldwide. However, the challenges are significant: Infrastructure barriers: Many schools lack even basic necessities like electricity, drinking water, or toilets, let alone Internet access. Digital divide: Women and girls are disproportionately affected, with an average 6% gender gap in global Internet usage—and up to 11% in parts of Africa (source: ITU). Economic constraints: In low-income regions, setting up traditional telecommunications infrastructure like cell towers is often economically unfeasible. By leveraging LEO satellite technology, we can bypass these barriers and bring education to the most isolated communities. Practical Solutions Here’s how LEO satellites can help: Community Connectivity: Ground terminals can connect entire villages, enabling shared access to online learning resources through refurbished community computers or low-cost devices like Raspberry Pi systems. Direct-to-Phone Access: Emerging technologies now allow smartphones to connect directly to LEO satellites, bypassing the need for traditional telecom infrastructure. Even outdated smartphones, paired with solar chargers, could serve as powerful tools for learning. Support for Refugee Populations: Displaced communities often lack stable schooling. LEO satellite networks can provide consistent access to online education, no matter where these communities are located. The Benefits of Universal Education Economic Empowerment: Education creates opportunities for higher earnings, entrepreneurship, and local economic growth. Connected communities can also participate in global markets, selling their goods and services online. Cultural Exchange: By connecting remote communities to the broader world, we open the do

Pleased to share that I will be teaching the BTEC Certificate in Information Technology, starting next week, part-time. It's part-time, so will still be running Yesway Communications Couldn't resist playing around this afternoon, making an introductory video for one of the course units. Not sure if this will ever be seen in a classroom though 🤣
