Today in 1994: Hal Prince’s revival of SHOW BOAT opens at the Gershwin Theatre, starring Rebecca Luker, Elaine Stritch, and Mark Jacoby. The revival ran for 947 performances (and 12 previews) and earned ten Tony Award nominations, winning 5 awards including Best Revival of a Musical. LA CAGE AUX FOLLES opened on Broadway 43 years ago today!💖🏳️‍🌈 For the first time on Broadway, a musical celebrated love, marriage and children as universally human themes, regardless of sexual orientation. The show-stopping song, “I Am What I Am” became a rallying cry and anthem that has been sung with pride all around the world ever since. With a score by Jerry Herman and book by Harvey Fierstein, LA CAGE ran on Broadway for 1,761 performances (and 15 previews) and was nominated for 9 Tony Awards, winning 6, including Best Musical! Tragically, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES also coincided with the time that the AIDS epidemic was decimating the Broadway community. In 1984, cast members performed in one of the first charity evenings to raise funds for people suffering from the disease. Soon afterward, the surge of concern in the theatrical community led led to the creation of two charitable organizations, Broadway Cares and Equity Fights AIDS, now known as Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS. In 1985, the cast of LA CAGE AUX FOLLES appeared along Dr. Ruth Westheimer as she spoke in support of AIDS research and care, wearing a custom LA CAGE costume featured here.
