Founded in 2021, Arizona-based @brickroadcoffee is a gay-owned business selling in-person and subscription coffee. Since their initial opening, which was met with both community jubilation and a series of protests, including one bomb threat, they’ve expanded to two locations and a roastery, with a third location arriving in Phoenix’s Melrose District later this year. Hagen, who previously worked in corporate, and his husband Jesse Shank, whose previous career was in nightlife hospitality, wanted to create a third space that queer people of all ages can enjoy. Brick Road’s expansion into a roastery enables a wider audience via coffee subscriptions, and creates opportunities to further champion their values via supply chain decisions. For example, when it recently emerged that a supplier’s new leadership was not aligned with their values, Hagen and Shank were able to change vendors with minimal disruption. Who was Pedro Zamora? // Pedro Zamora was a Cuban-American AIDS educator and one of the first openly gay men living with AIDS on mainstream television when he was cast on The Real World: San Francisco in 1994. At the time, an HIV diagnosis made you uninsurable, so MTV covered Zamora's health care costs during and after filming, a rare exception. Zamora found out he was HIV-positive at 17 while he was giving blood. He went on to do hundreds of speaking engagements before passing away at 22 years old. In his final year, he was cast on The Real World. His health began to decline during filming, but he told producers he wanted to tell his story to the end. HIV and other pre-existing conditions often led to financial ruin at this time because your health care costs would be out of pocket. The Affordable Care Act of 2010 made it illegal to deny coverage based on a pre-existing condition, although that clause didn't go into effect until 2014. Zamora died on November 11, 1994, hours after the season finale aired. President Bill Clinton issued a formal statement honoring him. His story is why many consider The Real World: San Francisco to be one of the most impactful and consequential seasons in all of reality television history.
