All members should be able to mask up quickly, with gloves on. ๐จ๐ปโ๐๐งค โฑ๏ธ Under 20 seconds should be the goal. For many, under 10 seconds. โ ๏ธ Done quickly AND done correctly. No skin showing, hood not blocking your vision, good mask seal, chin strap on. Coming off the rig with your mask on is not always possible or appropriate. Even if that's what you do "most of the time," - there are scenarios on every fireground where you may take that mask off, and have to put it back on. Either way, if you have the skill to "mask up quick," - you have both options available to you. Remember, the key to mastering the 'mask-up quick' skill is practice. Regular and consistent practice will not only help you achieve your best time but also ensure that you can execute this crucial task flawlessly when it matters the most. LIVE TOMORROW! Fireground styles - Incident Command driven vs. Standard Operating Guideline driven. ๐ฅ๐ฅ The two most common styles of fireground management are: 1๏ธโฃ IC Driven - in which the Incident Commander gives all directions and assignments on a per-fire basis. 2๏ธโฃ SOG Driven - in which companies have pre-determined assignments based on their arrival order and automatically deploy based on them. Join us as we discuss the strengths and weaknesses of both. Weโll be talking about: ๐จ๐ปโ๐ The effect of each on the company officer & firefighters ๐ง Considerations for both for the incident commander ๐ How each style impacts our pre-incident preparation and fireground deployment Whether youโre โlevel 1 stagingโ or โassuming 1st engine,โ - youโll want to hear this conversation. Joining me will be DFC Floyd Wise (Harrisburg Bureau of Fire), BFC Frank Malta & Capt. Sean Donovan (Frederick County Fire) and Capt. Kevin Burges (Salisbury Fire). Giving the Division Progress Report as a Tactical Supervisor ๐๏ธ๐ฅโฌ๏ธ One of the jobs of a tactical supervisor (division or group) is to provide progress reports and needs requests from their area to the incident commander. This clip is from a longer video on my entire workflow when assigned as a tactical supervisor (standby to copy on that). ๐ฅ At this point, I have been assigned as Division 1 and have been assigned my companies (see my previous reel). My next step is to enter and visually assess my area. I look to see what conditions they are dealing with and then seek to meet with company officers and get a quick update on their actions and needs. This is focused primarily on the status of the primary benchmarks: ๐ฆ From Engine Companies - status of the fire. Water on the fire? Fire knocked down? ๐ช From Ladder/Rescue Companies - status of the search, and later status of extension. I then like to take a step away from the action to somewhere quiet and out of the way to give all this information to Command in one progress report. Including all of this information in one radio transmission from the division supervisor really reduces the amount of radio traffic while still getting Command the information they need. It also allows company officers to focus on leading their companies and doing their jobs instead of having to worry about talking on the radio. โญ๏ธโญ๏ธ Looking for a deep-dive into real-world, fireground-proven command systems and practices? Our next Aggressive Command Supports Aggressive Firefighting cohort is about to BEGIN! This 10-WEEK PROGRAM consists of the full Aggressive Command training program plus multiple private LIVE Q&A sessions, during which you can discuss challenges, questions, and concepts with instructors and classmates from around the country. If you know how to lay a line, you don't have to block everyone out doing so... ๐๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ I often hear this excuse: " We can't lay a lineโwe'll block the truck out," or block someone else out, or some other crazy excuse. I'm just saying. I've been on departments that lay lines at every reported structure fire for the past 20+ years, and it's never really been an issue. โ As you lay the line, keep the engine on the same side of the street that you started on. โ Cross over, if necessary, AT OR PAST the fire building - depending on whether you want to stop short or pull past. โ If you drive down the center of the road, those will lay in the center of the road. โ If you drive like you're on a slalom course, the hose will zig-zag across the road. It doesn't have to be a big deal if you know what you're doing... Don't make excuses; figure out how to do your job correctly! ๐๐ผ #CombatReady . . . #enginecompany #truckcompany #structurefire #workingfire #boxalarm #fireofficer #helmetcam #firefighter #firefightertraining #firefightertiktok #firefightersoftiktok #firefightertok

When making or taking a tactical supervisor assignment (division or group), it must be clear what companies are assigned to the supervisor.๐ฅโฌ๏ธ In this case, Iโm being assigned to manage Division 1 (the first floor) at this house fire, and have been assigned Engine 3, Ladder 1, and Ladder 4. My job will be to coordinate the actions of those companies on the first floor and communicate progress and needs from the first floor to the Incident Commander. Clearly communicating this makes the tactical supervisor, the companies assigned to the division, and all others on the fireground aware of the incident organization and who is responsible for what area. When properly utilized, tactical supervisors are one of the most effective ways to control incident communications and provide for de-centralized fireground command. ๐๐ผ For more information on this and other street-smart command practices, check out our Aggressive Command Supports Aggressive Firefighting series - available as an online course, in-person seminar, or hands-on training program. ๐ฌ #CombatReady ๐จ๐ปโ๐ . . . #workingfire #structurefire #boxalarm #firechief #fireofficer #firefighter #firefightertraining #firefightertok #firefightersoftictok #housefire

For structure fires - GEOGRAPHIC ORGANIZATION (DIVISIONS) BEATS FUNCTIONAL ORGANIZATION (GROUPS). ๐ฅ Many areas commonly organize their fireground by tasks - "fire attack, vent, search, RIT", etc. However organizing in this way has several problems. 1๏ธโฃ It is not expandable past a single tactical area. While you may get away with this at a small 1-story fire, it cannot be expanded to a multi-story building without getting involved in some really wordy and confusing radio designations... 2๏ธโฃ Functional organization does not provide you with any idea of WHERE they are. You know what they are doing, but not where they are doing it. This is problematic from an IC perspective - when you're job is to know where your companies are at all times. โ While functional organization has its place on some incident types, most structure fires are NOT ONE OF THEM. โ At structure fires - geographic organization (divisions) is THE WAY TO GO. Lots to be said on this, but here's some thoughts from a recent Live Q&A - check out my other videos for more. Dividing up the incident = decentralizing Command. ๐ช๐ผ๐ฅ When the IC divides up the incident (typically into divisions or groups) - they are giving the supervisor of that area control of the TACTICS of that area. These tactical-level supervisors have the responsibility and authority to fix the problems in their area using the resources assigned to them - communicating with the IC about progress or needs but not requiring permission for much. ๐๐ผ Decentralizing the fireground like this makes operations more fluid and nimble and allows for officers in position to make local decisions more QUICKLY than having to "mother may I" everything through Command. ๐๐ผ This substantially speeds up the tempo of operations on the fireground and reduces unnecessary radio traffic. Check out the Aggressive Command Supports Aggressive Firefighting program for more street-smart command concepts. The online course is always available, and we are ENROLLING NOW FOR OUR NEXT 10-WEEK COMMAND COHORT, beginning April 8. ๐ (this clip was from one of the live events in our last cohort) More info in my story & bio. #CombatReady ๐จ๐ปโ๐ . . . #StructureFire #boxalarm #firechief #firefighter #FirefighterTraining #firetraining #battalionchief #firefightertiktok #firefightersoftiktok #firefightertok

โ ๏ธ๐ฅ VICTIM VICTIM VICTIM! Thoughts on calling the "urgent" when you locate a victim in a fire. Many things go into making a successful grab: ๐ Your search techniques for locating the victim. ๐๏ธ Calling the "urgent" to notify the IC and others. ๐จ๐ปโ๐ Techniques for removing the victim from the building. ๐ Patient care for the victim once out. Indeed, there are many finer skills within each of these categories and other things that need to be considered. The point is, on your next day in the firehouse - DISCUSS AND TRAIN ON ALL THESE THINGS WITH YOUR CREW. Locating a victim is one of the most stressful and critical things we do as firefighters. Make sure you have a plan and the skills for all the parts of the grab that are necessary to make a successful rescue with the best possible outcome. #CombatReady . . . . #boxalarm #firechief #housefire #firefighter #FireOfficer #workingfire #StructureFire #enginecompany #truckcompany #housefire #firefightertiktok #firefighters #firefightersoftiktok #firefightertok

LINES OFF, LADDERS UP! ๐จ๐จ๐ปโ๐๐ I was brought up in a fast-paced fire department culture where when a box alarm (reported structure fire) dropped - it was always 100% GAME ON. ๐๐ปโโ๏ธ Running to the rig ๐จ Getting out the door quick ๐งค Coming off dressed and ready ๐ง Dropping supply line & pulling attack lines ๐ช Throwing ladders & placing the aerial Even with nothing showing. Even on rigs doing 4000-5000 runs a year, we did this every time. Because we were led to believe that every reported fire was going to be a working fire. With people trapped. And a MAYDAY. And when it was - you wanted and NEEDED to be ready. So we put in the work. And a lot of times - IT WASN'T A FIRE. Oh well, we put it all back. Turns out, for people who want to be firefighters - ITS FUN to do firefighter stuff. And, when it is a fire - WE CRUSH IT because WE ARE READY. And when it's not a fire - it was the most realistic training drill you could've had that day. And BTW when you do this, and others don't - you SMOKE them on the fireground. ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ So, because it is inarguably effective - it's what I still do. ๐๐ผ #CombatReady . . . #StructureFire #boxalarm #FireOfficer #firechief #firefighter #firefightertraining #workingfire #enginecompany #truckcompany #battalionchief #fireground #firefightertiktok #firefightersoftiktok #firefighterlife

If every member of your department is not trained and prepared for THIS FIRE SCENARIO - you are setting yourself up for failure. ๐ฌ๐ฅ โญ๏ธ When there are people trapped and/or a MAYDAY drops, there is NO TIME to figure out what you're going to do and tell everyone about it. This has to be the scenario you've been preparing for - because there is LITTLE TIME to react to it. โญ๏ธ Now is the time to IMPLEMENT a plan - not make one. The best way to achieve success in the offensive, trapped, MAYDAY scenario is to prepare your members BEFORE the fire. And this starts with enough resources and a good plan. ๐๐ผ Check out the full video at links in my story & bio for more from this clip from our Aggressive Command Supports Aggressive Firefighting program. ๐ฅ #CombatReady ๐จ๐ปโ๐ . . . #firefighter #firechief #boxalarm #StructureFire #firefightertraining #housefire #firefighting #workingfire #enginecompany #truckcompany #fireofficer #firefightertiktok #firefightersoftiktok #firefightertok

Building out an incident is one of the most essential skills for an incident commander. The result should be.... ๐ฅโฌ๏ธ 1๏ธโฃ Identify all the tactical areas that need to be covered and ensure the right number and type of resources are sent there. 2๏ธโฃ Keeping the incident within the span of control. When we get task saturated, the incident falls apart. Deciding how to structure your incident must consider many factors, but it must be a practiced skill that you can deploy quickly on the fireground - just like a good pump operator can quickly account for all the considerations that lead to the proper pump discharge pressure. How many companies do you need on a structure fire? ๐ฅ๐ง One of the most critical FAILURES fire departments and incident commanders make is not sending enough resources to fires, EARLY, to cover the jobs we KNOW we will need to do. The fireground is a time-sensitive event. Seconds matter for victims and for the growth of the fire. โฑ๏ธ๐ฅ ๐๐ป It is our job to be so good that we can do our job CORRECTLY AND QUICKLY. So many people want to throw darts at people who โmove quicklyโ or โrun on the firegroundโ. That could be because those commenting are not good enough at their tasks to execute them correctly, quickly, and safely. So, instead of rising to the challenge, they try to tell others to come down to their level. Knock it off. โ You may not be able to power lift 600 lbs either, but that doesnโt mean they should cancel the Olympics on your account. โญ๏ธ If you canโt do your jobs safely and quickly - WORK HARDER until you can. Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast. But ultimately - the goal is to be so smooth that we get FAST. Skills done correctly but quickly is the goal. When seconds count - and if it was your family involved - time is of the essence. Doing it right matters, but so does speed. ๐๐ปโโ๏ธ #CombatReady ๐จ๐ปโ๐ . . . #boxalarm #structurefire #workingfire #housefire #firefighter #firefightertraining #firechief #truckcompany #enginecompany #halligan #firefightertiktok #firefightersoftiktok #firefightertok

Fire below the top floor in a multiple dwelling? Consider an early 2nd alarm. ๐ฅ๐๐ Quite frankly, many departments are slim on resources on their first alarm for a house fire. But at an apartment building, resources get thin for everybody. With a top-floor fire, the worst-case scenario is that we get fire in the attic and burn the roof off. This isn't good - but it's not nearly as bad as having a lower floor fire where some or all of the OCCUPIED ADDITIONAL FLOORS are the exposure. As we talk about in the Aggressive Command program, good incident commanders are aware of how many "tactical areas" they can cover with their first alarm assignment. When the scenario exceeds our resource capabilites, we must call for help. Multi-family dwellings compound this - the number of units and people in them can quickly outpace initial resources. โ ๏ธ The old adage is true - it's much better to call for help you don't need than to need help you don't have. At these fires, STRIKE THE NEXT ALARM EARLY! "You can be a quitter, or you can be a Frederick County firefighter - but you can't be both" ๐๐ผ๐จ๐ปโ๐ This is a clip from one of the best day-one recruit school speeches I've heard - delivered by my buddy @firefightnchief. Frank Malta is a battalion chief with Frederick County Fire/Rescue and has been a Combat Ready Fire Training instructor for several years. He is presently in charge of FCFR's recruit training academy. I have been consistently impressed with the no-nonsense, service-first mentality of Frederick County Fire. When we talk about mindset and culture, this is a department that lives it. And I think that a lot of that starts at the bottom, in recruit training, with the standards and expectations set forth on that first day. In any multi-story building, the lower the floor of fire - the worse the situation is. ๐ฅ๐ฑ As part of your size-up and reports on any multi-story building, a KEY COMPONENT is - WHAT FLOOR IS THE FIRE ON? ๐๏ธ When we have a top-floor fire, it may look impressive. It may spread to the cockloft or attic of an attached exposure. But ultimately, the worst-case scenario is we burn a roof off. โ ๏ธ However, when we have fire below the top floor, especially if the fire is on the lowest floor, EVERYTHING ABOVE is an exposure. This is critical particularly in an apartment building, where there may be many units and many people on the floors above. This is just a piece of the conversation from a recent First Alarm Strategy & Tactics program in Peabody, MA. Good company officers make the incident commander's job easy. ๐๐จ๐ปโ๐๐ฅ When the incident commander arrives late to the game, it's like showing up to coach the Super Bowl at the end of the first quarter. ๐ โ ๏ธ In this situation, the performance and communication of the initial arriving company officers is what sets the tone for the incident. When company officers do the right job well and clearly communicate their actions and location, command's job is much easier. Command also doesn't have to go hunting for information by calling company officers and asking them questions while they're working... Pre-incident planning and preparation makes or breaks the fireground. ICs need to understand what companies are doing and dealing with, and company officers need to understand what command needs. When both sides understand each other, the incident is smooth. And a smooth incident is much more likley to have a good outcome. ๐๐ผ Aggressive Command Supports Aggressive Firefighting. #CombatReady ๐จ๐ปโ๐ . . . #incidentcommand #FireOfficer #FireChief #boxalarm #StructureFire #firefighter #firefightertraining #firefighters #firefightertiktok #firefightersoftiktok #firefighterlife #firefightertok #enginecompany #truckcompany #housefire

If the only time youโre setting up the rig is on a working fire, youโre probably not gonna be very good at it. Get out and get your reps! ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ๐ Too many drivers only position and set up the rig on a working fire or at the burn building. More repetition is needed to hone the skills necessary to be the best aerial operator you can be. The intricacies of correctly positioning on real-world streets with real-world challenges and the workflows of getting the aerial out of the bed quickly require development and maintenance. They simply cannot be replicated just on the front pad of the firehouse or at the burn building. Especially if you are a backup driver and do not drive daily, you must practice as much as possible! โญ๏ธ Take advantage of automatic fire alarms, smoke in the building, or any other call type, or just take some time today and get out on your streets and position in real scenarios on real buildings. โญ๏ธ On a real fire, when seconds count to make the grab or make the roof, your performance will be a reflection of what you have PRACTICED to do - not what you HOPE to be able to do. ๐๐ผ Now get out and get some #reps! The stationary Incident Commander & the forward Tactical Supervisor ๐ฅโฌ๏ธ This video shows the perspectives of both the IC at a stationary command post and the tactical supervisor in a forward mobile position. Both perspectives have both value and limitations. ๐ At the command post, the IC benefits from a calm, controlled, noise-isolated environment that is distraction-free and well-suited to focusing on managing the fire and tracking the incident on their tactical worksheet. However, their view is limited to 1-2 sides of the incident. ๐จ๐ปโ๐ The tactical supervisor has the benefit of mobility and direct contact with the officers assigned to them; however, they are subject to distraction from people, noise, and hands-on tasks - making it much easier to miss something. It is also much more difficult to hear the radio, and they are not well suited to tracking companies on a command board. In my experience, both positions are essential, and the incident benefits most when we fill BOTH roles EARLY in the fire. ๐ช๐ผ For us, the first Chief will be the IC and remain at the stationary command post in their vehicle. The second arriving Chief takes the forward position, typically assigned as a division supervisor to the fire floor or wherever else has the most challenges. We talk extensively about the roles of these positions in our Aggressive Command Supports Aggressive Firefighting program. Check out our website for more information on bringing the program to your department or event, or access the online course now - info in my bio. #CombatReady ๐๐ผ . . . #workingfire #structurefire #firechief #FireOfficer #firefighter #firefightertraining #aggressivecommand #firefightertiktok #firefightersoftiktok #firefightertok #housefire #enginecompany #truckcompany #incidentcommand
