(I know I make crappy BL edits but that will never stop me from speaking out about injustices in my community with the platform I have.) I included monarch butterflies because in the warmer months they migrate to the north for survival. Like Immigrants they don’t do it by choice but rather out of necessity. Monarch butterflies are a beautiful symbol of people’s resilience and the natural need for biodiversity. (I wrote a lot under the hashtags but it is important to be that I talk about what I believe in.) #awareness #hispanic #latino #immigrant #immigration I think this is an issue that is so close to my heart because I am a child of immigrants. I remember being young and naïve to the world around me. I remember not being afraid of going out with my parents to go play in the park or read in the library. I remember not having to be afraid that one day my parents wouldn’t make it home and that I would be left all alone. Children around me and I shouldn’t have to be afraid that our parents might be taken away from us. I see the struggles that people around me go through every day, and I am saddened. Saddened because these people, these families who have to make the difficult decisions for their children, are dehumanized by the media and people pushing their agenda. The new year just started, but the number of injustices that immigrants face just keeps increasing. People are dying or being wrongly persecuted. The only way these injustices will stop is if we come together as a nation and speak up. What it means to be an American citizen is not defined by your status in this country, but by the way you conduct yourself in this country. My parents are hard workers; they have jobs, they pay taxes. They don’t get benefits from the government, yet people go out of their way to demonize them. Immigrants are not “taking all the jobs,” they’re not all “drug dealers” or “criminals”, they are not “aliens”, they are not the problem. They are human, just like the rest of us. They cry and bleed just like the rest of us. They do a lot of good for this country. Immigrants pay almost $100 billion dollars in taxes, yet they are being deported just for trying to support their families. It’s not easy packing up your life and starting fresh in a new country where you don’t speak the language or know anyone. People choose to move here for their kids because they want to give them a better life, or because it’s not safe in their home country. I think, in all, we shouldn’t be targeting a group that brings so much prosperity and hope to our nation. We should be looking at what truly is threatening our democracy: the one precent and the people in power. It angers me to think that people believe what we are the problem, the Trump Administration has made billions of dollars worth of cuts to health, science, and education and yet because will swear it was all the immigrants. We are not here to replace you, we just want a better life for our families. People who also say that they don’t really care about politics anger me as well because how can you sit here and say that and be comfortable with the injustices and atrocities happening around you? We are living in fear yet you are too privileged or ignorant to care? We, as the people, have the power to change for the better. We, the children of immigrants, are the future of the United States. We’re here to stay, and we’re not afraid to fight back. We will make this country free again. We have always been a country of immigrants, whether you’re the child of a 1st-generation immigrant or a 2nd-generation immigrant. You have always understood that we have always fought for what we believe is right—why should this be any different?
