Another example is how the Yoruba and Igbo ‘nations’ were born in the 20th century through the creation of a single dialect and the teaching of this in all schools. Before then they had different dialects, kingdoms and viewed themselves as different peoples. An Ijebu person was fairly incoherent to a Ketu person despite them both existing under the modern banner of ‘Yoruba’. This can also be tied to unemployment and low economic activity as I discussed in my previous video on xenophobia.
