Two years ago I didn't know anything about interview films. First one, someone else wrote the questions and someone else graded it. I was the guy holding the camera. Second one, I pitched my own set of questions to the director. He approved them, and he liked the flow, the order they went in. That was the first time I understood that the questions are the job. Third one, the client went through my questions and adjusted them to what they actually needed. So it still wasn't fully mine, and that's the part that made it work. My camera, our questions, my grade. Somewhere in there I built a real skill: writing questions a client will sign off on, ordering them so the story builds, lighting a room so it still looks like their room, and grading it so it feels the way it felt to be there. Everything I ask for is easy to say yes to. That's the problem. My first cold shoot went fine until I got cocky, tried to direct the whole place, and handed them a reel that disappointed everyone. I never forgot that. So I started cold calling instead, about ten businesses, and that was worse. They can't see your face on a phone call, so you're just a voice asking for something. At the first café I got there at 10am, then spent an hour not asking. It would go quiet, I'd tell myself to stand up, and the line would fill again. Over and over, until my stomach made the decision for me. I've never been talked into bravery by hunger before. When I finally asked, the yes took two seconds. What got my courage back was watching @bysoochan give businesses something real for free, with no pitch attached. Once I was walking in to give instead of to take, asking got easier. I still stopped at the first yes at one of them. Every frame from that place is beautiful and empty. The one shot here with life in it came from the one time I pushed and asked for one more thing. Asking small feels safe. It's why the rooms are empty. Tomorrow: a spin wheel decides my next shoot. Random mood, random object, random angle. If I can't direct on demand, I can at least practice being told what to shoot. Day 2 of 30. Day 1 of 30. Started on the 19th. My number. Felt right. I left the perfect job for a stupid dream. I'm 25. Like a lot of guys my age, my head was full of ideas about making money fast as a solo videographer. Go on your own, and the clients will come. Then I started scrolling Facebook groups looking for gigs. Every post had tons of comments from people doing the same thing I do, some better, some cheaper, some with a network from day one or a name they'd already built. I had neither. I have the video skills and the knowledge. What I don't have is the marketing: the talking, the negotiating, selling myself. That turned out to be the hard part. And I procrastinate. A lot. I plan, and plan, and plan. I talk to AI for hours. I do one thing, then the next day I forget about it, and the cycle starts again. It's a toxic thing I do to myself. So this time, I'm doing it in public. For the next 30 days, I'm not going to market myself. I'm just going to talk to you like a normal person and tell you the story, one day at a time, until I land a job or a client. If I disappear on Day 4, you'll know why. The three ND filters nobody explains: ND — fixed strength. One number, one darkness. Cleanest glass, cheapest. You just have to carry a few. VND — variable. Twist to change strength. Convenient, but it's two polarizers stacked. Past ~5 stops you get an X-shaped band across the frame and a colour shift. Cheap ones tint your shadows red. IRND — blocks infrared. Normal ND lets IR through and your sensor sees it — that's why cheap ND turns dark areas magenta. This is the real fix. Also the expensive one. What I'd actually buy: Starting out → a fixed 6-stop. Under P1,000. One filter for everything → True Color VND, 5 stops max. ~P3,000. Skip → cheap dual-range VND kits under P2k. That's where all the problems live. Check your lens thread size first. Focusing so hard on one thing that you forget everything else...... Back in my last term before graduation, I was assigned to create a promo video for my OJT. I was the only one handling it, and at first I didn’t think it was a big task. But as the work unfolded, it grew into something much bigger. I started to feel what a full production really demands — planning, shooting, revisions, pressure, and expectations. I dealt with stress, own stupid moments, and the weight of knowing I wasn’t showing up for my group the way I should have.
