- According to Anaxa's character story, when he was only five years old he successfully created artificial birds, but also ever-blooming artificial flowers. These flowers were designed to never wilt, remaining in a perpetual state of bloom. He was fascinated that something he created could imitate life so convincingly, and the moment left him marveling at the idea that through knowledge and experimentation he could essentially create something that behaved like new life. But Castorice, due to her connection to Thanatos, is cursed to "kill" anything she touches. Including flowers. Anaxa, the boy who once celebrated creating life, becomes the mentor of a girl who is forced to live with the power of death. - In the CN ver of the debate with the Council in 3.2, Phainon describes the scent of his home as "minty"/ "mint-like." Tribbie compares Anaxa to mint ice cream at one point, and Anaxa's favorite drink (fizzy wasabi vinegar) is said to taste like mint-lemon soda. - Phainon is associated with the Forget-Me-Not flowers, which are commonly blue (his signature colour), representing true love, unwavering fidelity and loyalty, and lasting memories. But they can also be pink (Hyacine - symbolizing romance, tenderness, nurturing relationships, and care) or purple (Castorice - often linked to admiration, elegance, and deep respect, closely aligning with the general meaning of enduring affection). Anyway I really love Anaxa's relationship with his students. I genuinely wish more people talked about them because their dynamic is one of the most interesting mentor/student relationships and it affects all four of their characters so much. It's not just Anaxa who's their teacher - they actively shape who he becomes too. His whole philosophy is about pushing people to think further, to prove his theories, to go beyond what he can do, etc., but the reason that philosophy actually matters is because he has students capable of challenging him. Hyacine literally playfully calls herself his "nemesis" when she forces him to follow proper teaching protocol. And because of that, the relationship goes both ways. Teachers shape their students, but students shape their teachers too. Anaxa becomes the kind of philosopher he is because of them. They take what he teaches and carry it further than he could alone. I hate how this gets overlooked, but Anaxa's relationship with his students are the most intimate relationships he has, and they humanize him so much. He is the only one who evaluates Ouma on Ouma's own terms. "Lies" were how Ouma interacted with the world. His lies protected him, tested people, entertained him, pushed people away, and sometimes paradoxically tried to reach them. And Shuichi doesn't lament failing to understand him at all, he is acknowledging that Ouma was never a mystery with a final answer waiting at the bottom. I could name a handful of my own issues with the writing of Kaito and Maki's relationship & why I dislike her developing a crush on him but Kaito fans will have my head on a spike if I dare call out his AND the writers' blatant misogyny lmfaooo. Maki shines so brightly as an independent character when she's interacting with someone who respects her boundaries like Shuichi does, the only times she's smiled in the game have been with him too. —as if Shuichi's entire arc isn't him getting hit over the head with the realization that "truth good, lie bad" is the most kindergarten-level understanding of morality imaginable, and he calls Kokichi "the embodiment of a lie", meaning he is explicitly identifying Kokichi as the exact antithesis and parallel to his own identity as the "truth-teller", effectively admitting that they are two sides of the same coin and that he cannot fully define himself without acknowledging the piece of him that Kokichi represents; DO YOU WANT ME TO GO ON. "But it's not about their relationship, it's just the theme of the game!" Yeah. Exactly. The theme. The thing the entire story is structured around. The thing that determines why these characters are paired together in the first place. The fact that their dynamic embodies the central conflict of V3 is not evidence against romance it's the reason it IS romance in the first place. The theme is the mechanism through which the story explores that romance.
