The present means everything, and you shouldn’t use the past as a reason to lower yourself. The mistakes you made aren’t things you should dwell on. Don’t let your past self pull your present self back with it. Yotsuba’s story is a lot about perspective, and how your self-perception can blind you from seeing the full picture. Negativity biases are products of your self-hate and never let those thoughts get you down. And maybe one day, I will be able to take my ribbon off too.

I wanted to keep it simple and I want to make more in the future.

Yotsuba for me is more than just my favorite character. Its like my own soul bits are apart of this character. A past of loss. Searching for meaning and a reason to live through external validation is a concept that resonates too much with me. Her past mirrors mine in a way that squeezes my soul. I lost who I was searching for these things and my “ribbon” wrapped on me tight. Like Yotsuba, my own grades dropped and I hid behind extracirrular activities and I made a big mistake. It fueled my lack of self-worth and I decided to live for others. She encapsulates my own inner conflicts and what originally started that conflict. Because of those mistakes, Yotsuba lived a life of suppression and self-destruction. She was so determined to atone for those mistakes, that she forgot the definition of her own happiness. Our lives were distorted by this lack of self-worth and this belief that we weren’t worth it. The continuous questions that flowed through our minds wondering if we were allowed to be happy were reoccurring. My waivering identity was something of the past and now all I did was wear a mask. Yotsuba throughout the series helps everyone but herself. Her dream is nothing but a distant desire, and it’s that want to be chosen. That want to create a genuine relationship and that want to grab on to the wish that she desired for so long reignited how empty I felt. She never gave up. She never stopped helping people despite her own wavering identity. Even when the wish made its presence, she decided to run away. She couldn’t accept it. She believed she wasn’t worthy. For a long time now I’ve been running away from happiness because I believe I don’t deserve it. How I am current day heavily mirrors, Yotsuba actions through the series. But then Yotsuba gets her answer. Her life has meaning and the way she lived has ignited the hearts of many. She was able to accept her flaws. She was able to accept her mistakes. And most importantly she was able to accept herself. I want to be able to become a person like that. Shes the character I look up to. Through the trials and tribulations, she never gave up on her dream. And the identity that she had lost all those years ago was now reawakened in her. This life of suppression and self hatred isn’t a life I want. I want to be able to accept myself and be able to take off my own ribbon. So for me, Yotsuba isn’t just a character. She’s the embodiment of the mistakes of my past, the conflicts of my present, and the person I want to be in the future.
