☕️ A Starbucks menu reminded me of something I see every day with students and adults. Bam!! Standing there in line, it hit me: sometimes what’s right in front of us gets all our attention, while a whole bunch of other options are technically available but completely out of sight. Today, only a fraction of the menu was visible. As the line moved and people waited behind me, I noticed something fascinating from a neuroscience perspective. Even though there were likely dozens of options available, I found myself gravitating toward what I could immediately see and access. The human brain does this naturally. When we’re under pressure, feeling rushed, uncertain, or experiencing even mild stress, the amygdala—the brain’s threat detection system—becomes more active. As this happens, the prefrontal cortex, which supports reasoning, planning, working memory, and decision-making, becomes less efficient. This is why knowledge and performance are not the same thing. I see parents become frustrated when a child says, “I don’t know,” on a test after correctly answering the same question at home. The assumption is often that the child didn’t learn the material. But neuroscience tells us a different story. The information may be stored. The challenge may be accessing it. When cognitive load increases, distractions rise, emotions escalate, or time pressure is added, the brain often defaults to what is most familiar, visible, and easily retrievable in that moment. This is why executive functioning skills matter so much. Success is not simply about acquiring information. It’s about being able to: ✔ Regulate emotions ✔ Manage stress ✔ Organize information ✔ Filter distractions ✔ Hold information in working memory ✔ Retrieve and apply knowledge under pressure Whether we’re talking about a second grader taking a spelling test, a high school student preparing for college, or an adult navigating Starbucks performance depends on more than what we know. It depends on whether we can access what we know when it matters most. That’s the gap I help families understand—and close. Because when we stop asking, “Why aren’t they trying harder?” and start asking, “What’s getting in the way of access?” everything changes. #ExecutiveFunctioning #FutureFocusedPath #Neuroscience #LearningAndTheBrain #ADHD
