29-year-old professional football player, David Montgomery, didn’t get to where he is now by sitting on the sidelines… When we say “sidelines,” we’re talking about sports AND Scouting. A member of Troop 772 (a troop in Cincinnati), David fell in love with Scouting quickly. In time, he earned the highest and most revered rank – #EagleScout status – in 2014. But, when David first joined #CubScouts, he was a bit nervous…thinking #Scouting was not for people like him. He quickly learned this fear was unwarranted – from Pinewood Derby, to campouts, to earning plenty of Merit Badges in #ScoutsBSA, to so much more…David excelled in Scouting. Sitting on the sidelines was never an option. “I definitely think it’s a form of fear because the thought of what everybody else around them would think,” Montgomery explains in a recent AP article. “Definitely think that plays a major role. So, I think me playing football and playing as long as I have and being a positive … role model in regards to scouting, I definitely think it gives kids who look like me an opportunity to believe that that’s something that they can do also.” Scouting helped shape exactly the man Montgomery is today. Now, with a son of his own (future Cub Scout, of course!), David sees Scouting as even more valuable. “Scouting gave me the right tools to make me understand what’s really right and what’s really wrong,” David tells the AP. Kids of all ages learn life skills, gain outdoor experience, discover new things, develop character, grow in the Scout Law and become prepared – FOR LIFE – in Scouting America programs. Don’t let your child miss out. Find a Scouting unit near you in seconds at BeAScout.org. #AdventureOn

As we welcome autumn, we’re reflecting on some of our favorite Scouting moments from this past summer. One that comes to mind? When Ricky Mason – lifelong #EagleScout and National Chair of Scouting America – visited Scout camps on the East Coast. While at Mt. Allamuchy Scout Reservation, Ricky had the chance to talk to staff and adult leaders from the Patriots’ Path Council of Scouting America. While this video captures but a snippet of Ricky’s camp visit, it’s enough of a glimpse to demonstrate something very clearly… The individuals leading Scouting America camps across the country care about one thing above all else – your children, your children’s safety and the memories your children make outside. As we thank Ricky and these incredible employees, we bring the spirit of summer camp with us in all activities this fall. If you’ve never heard of Scouting or are new to this, we urge you to come check things out for yourself. You can visit a troop or a pack meeting now. Don’t wait – visit www.BeAScout.org to get started, today. #AdventureOn #ScoutingAmerica #ScoutsBSA #Scouting

Less “What do you want to be when you grow up?” More “What do you want to try?” That’s what we like about Path to Pro Skills Explorers. Youth ages 11–17 can get hands-on experience with the skilled trades through interactive activities, projects and real-world challenges – for FREE. Scouting America helped develop the program with @The Home Depot because learning by doing is kind of our thing. …and in a world where the demand for professionals in the trades is astounding – and the realm becomes even more lucrative for careers – this is more than skills development. It’s career readiness, confidence building, knowledge expansion and empirical learning – that is, learning through doing and experience. Whether you’re a current Scout, a volunteer, a parent, an educator or someone who works in the trades – this is for you. Visit pathtopro.com/skills-explorers) to get started. **For more details on Scouting America’s partnership with The Home Depot, see the official press release on Scouting Newsroom (ScoutingNewsroom.org).** #ScoutingAmerica #TheHomeDepot #ScoutsBSA #Scouting #AdventureOn

It is a day of remembrance. Today marks the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001 – a day when we saw the best of humanity rise to meet the worst of days. From the bravery of first responders to the heroic acts from ordinary civilians, 9/11/01 united us through courage, service and the duty to country. Thank you to every person who helped. As we reflect on 9/11, we take a moment to remember. Then find a way to serve. That’s how we truly never forget. #ScoutingAmerica #September11 #DayofRemembrance

“I’ve always approached art-making as a form of exploration—discovering new subjects and processes, unpacking them, and following them until I feel like I’ve learned what I can. For a long time, I thought I was searching for the subjects, forms and themes that would define me as an artist. Somewhere along the way, I realized that curiosity and exploration were probably at the core of my practice all along.” That’s a quote from a recent interview with lifelong Eagle Scout Josh Hunt, Scouting America’s official Artist in Residence. Learn more about Josh’s past, present and future in the latest “On Scouting” profile at OnScouting.org. Have a suggestion for Josh’s next Scouting piece? Drop it in the comments section. Scouts…from #CubScouts to Eagles, they’re pretty good at noticing things. A rose tucked into a name. A tree standing where so much was lost. Thousands of names surrounding two enormous pools. At the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, those details have a massive story behind them. As we approach the 25th anniversary of September 11, the museum is helping generations born after 2001 discover that story in ways created with young visitors in mind. Through experiences like the Art Cart, families can slow down, look closer and explore the Memorial together – they can learn about the Survivor Tree, the names on the memorial and the lives and experiences connected. If New York City is in your family’s or Scout unit’s future, put the 9/11 Memorial & Museum on the list. And you don’t have to wait for a trip to start learning. Follow the Museum on social media and explore its resources, stories and exhibitions at 911memorial.org. In partnership with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. #Sponsored #September11 #911Memorial #ScoutingAmerica

How can Scouts honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001? Serve. Help a neighbor. Care for a local memorial. Support your community. Gather your #Scouting unit for a project. Find a need locally - and, with the help of fellow #Scouts, meet it. The 25-year anniversary of 9/11 is one of Scouting America’s highlighted service opportunities through Impact365. So, this month, we're challenging all Scouts to ask one question: "How can we help make things better for those around us?" We encourage you to read the recent "On Scouting" blog post (at OnScouting.org) for inspiration and tell us how YOU are Doing a Good Turn this September. #ScoutingAmerica #ScoutsBSA #CubScouts

TIKTOK 👀 New research found that 96% of Eagle Scouts say they learned how to work effectively with others and 98% say Scouting helped develop their leadership. David Montgomery is a pretty good example! The pro football player and Eagle Scout credits Scouting with teaching him teamwork, leadership, and resilience — skills he still uses on and off the field. The research is hard to ignore. Check it out at Scouting.org/EagleScoutStudy #ScoutingAmerica #EagleScoutStudy

Happy Fourth of July, #ScoutingAmerica family! This weekend, we celebrate the 250th signing of the Declaration of Independence. We honor the United States of America and the people who continue to strengthen it through service, leadership and compassion toward one another. #Scouts across the nation are part of this story of service. From #CubScouts waving flags in hometown parades, to Venturers, Sea Scouts and Scouts BSA members investing in their communities, to #EagleScouts in the armed forces and beyond – Scouts thrive when they live lives of service. As we celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday, we salute the youth – from kindergarten Cub Scouts to 20-year-old Venturers – who are putting in 250 hours of service to commemorate 250 years of the United States of America. From Scouts in historical Boston, Massachusetts, to Scouts at U.S. military bases around the world, to Scouts living in the heartland of America – there is so much to celebrate. Happy Fourth of July! This week, Scouting America hosted the Eagles on the Hill reception in Washington, D.C., bringing Eagle Scouts, youth leaders, adult volunteers, lawmakers and legislative staff together on Capitol Hill. The reception gave Scouts the opportunity to meet with federal leaders and share how Scouting has shaped their character, leadership skills and commitment to public service. Eagle Scouts represent the values of duty, service, community and character. Their presence on Capitol Hill is a powerful reminder of Scouting America’s role in preparing young people to be active, engaged citizens. Thank you to the lawmakers and National Capital Area Council who joined us in recognizing the impact of Scouting and the promise of the next generation and made this event possible. #ScoutingAmerica #EagleScouts #EaglesOnTheHill #YouthLeadership #CivicEngagement

Military families serve our country in extraordinary ways – and #ScoutingAmerica is proud to help make Scouting more accessible for military children. Now, eligible youth in Active Duty, Reserve and National Guard families may qualify for the Military Family National Fee Waiver, which reduces the $85 national youth registration fee to $0 during online registration (and renewal). Dragons may be fictional – courage and character are definitely not. 🐉 Later today on the Trinity Broadcasting Network (@tbn_official) flagship ministry and talk show, "Praise." At 7 and 10 p.m. CST, Scouting America President, CEO and Chief Scout Executive, Roger Krone, joins Candace Lee and Eric Newman, authors of “George Goodwin, Dragon Slayer: A Scouting Legend,” to discuss courage, character and the Scouting values that help young people face life’s adventures. The story takes place at Big Mountain, West Virginia, drawing inspiration from one of our high adventure bases, The Summit Bechtel Reserve (@bechtelsummit). While the tale follows George and his fellow Scouts on a fictional quest, the #Scouting lessons stand true in real life. Through outdoor exploration, leadership development, service, plenty of fun and the Scout Law, Scouting America helps prepare youth for the “dragons” and adventures of life. Watch “The Heart of a Scout: Called to Be Courageous” on TBN tonight at 7 and 10 CST. #ScoutingAmerica #CharacterBuilding #YouthLeadership #Scouting #SummitBechtelReserve #TBN #ScoutsBSA @penguinrandomhouse @penguinbooks @scoutlifemag

This weekend - and always - #ScoutingAmerica extends our deepest gratitude and recognition to all our nation’s heroes. Memorial Day reminds us of the unwavering dedication, courage and integrity that men and women in the armed forces demonstrate every day. It asks us to remember the fallen - and to continually appreciate the freedom that they lost their lives defending. To the fallen men and women of our armed forces: thank you….and thank you to the families, friends and loved ones who remember the sacrifice every single day. U.S. troops’ service exemplifies the ideals of loyalty, bravery and duty - principles that guide our #Scouts as they learn, grow and pursue their own journeys across the country, year-round. While soldiers continue to safeguard our freedoms, youth from #CubScouts to #EagleScouts stand committed to serving their communities and making a positive difference in the world. Because many Scouts - past, present and future - choose to join the armed forces later in their lives, Memorial Day proves extremely significant to Scouting America. Thank you to our fallen and active soldiers - words fail to express how thankful we are. This Memorial Day, we challenge you to think of and ponder at least one fallen soldier. Reflect on the sacrifice he or she made for you, us and the entire American people - and think how you can carry that spirit of loyalty and bravery into your own life. PS - If you did something Scouting related this Memorial Day, send it our way at [email protected] for a chance to be featured. #NeverForget
