Kimi Antonelli was supposed to be one of the heroes of the Italian crowd. Instead, the young Italian stood on the 19th spot on the grid, after an engine penalty had ruined his qualifying position. Around him, the red shirts of the Ferrari fans filled the grandstands. The tifosi had come hoping for a Ferrari victory. Nobody expected Antonelli to win. But Kimi had other ideas. When the lights went out, he didn’t panic. He picked his way through the opening chaos, attacking whenever an opportunity appeared. One by one, cars disappeared behind him. 19th became 15th. 15th became 10th. Then 10th became 6th. And suddenly, the impossible didn’t look quite so impossible anymore. At the front, George Russell was leading for Mercedes. Max Verstappen was fighting near the sharp end. The race was constantly changing because of incidents and strategy, while Ferrari’s weekend was falling apart. Then came the moment Kimi had been waiting for. He had caught Russell. On Lap 18, Antonelli attacked his own teammate into the first chicane and took the lead. Russell fought back and briefly reclaimed it, but Kimi refused to let the opportunity disappear. Four laps later, Antonelli attacked again. This time, he got through. Kimi Antonelli was back in the lead. But there was still a long way to go. The Mercedes pit wall had gambled on different strategies for the two cars. A Virtual Safety Car gave Kimi the opportunity to make the strategy work, and suddenly his tyres and pace were perfectly matched to the final stages of the race. Behind him, Russell was pushing. Max Verstappen was chasing. The Monza crowd was roaring. And Kimi kept driving. Lap after lap. No mistakes. No panic. Just precision. Then the final lap arrived. The Italian flags waved above the circuit as Antonelli approached the final corners. Russell was still behind him, but the gap was enough. Kimi accelerated out of the Parabolica. He crossed the line.
