How Do We Avoid Backbiting? We do this by bringing to mind the ugliness and danger of backbiting. We should also reflect on the punishment for it in the next life. In the Quran, Allah likens the person who backbites to someone who eats the flesh of his dead brother. We should see backbiting as a lightning bolt which destroys our good deeds. We should accustom ourselves to only mentioning a person's good deeds and qualities if there is a benefit in doing so. It we are tempted to backbite someone due to a perceived fault, we should do two things instead: pray for them and give them sincere advice either directly or indirectly. Instead of allowing yourself to backbite, you must hold your tongue and use it to remember Allah. Instead of talking about worldly things, use wisdom in choosing a topic of conversation which is beneficial, such as stories of the Prophet, the Companions, the pious or the next life. In this way you will be acting upon the hadith: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should say what it is good or remain silent." After performing the Istikharah prayer (the Prayer of Seeking Guidance), how can someone know whether they are doing the right thing or merely following a whim? If the following signs are present then they are an indication of good: that your heart is settled on performing the action that you are seeking to embark upon; that the action will not lead to evil, or to that which is contrary to the Sacred Law and that doing the opposite of that action is not closer to taqwa (God-consciousness) and closer to caution in your religion. You may also repeat the Istikharah pray until your heart is settled. You must differentiate here between your heart being settled and the caprice of your lower selt. The lower selt may persistently demand that you perform an action and the sign of this is that it stands to benefit from this action by fulfilling its desires. This becomes manifest if performing this action will lead you into doubtful mat-ters, cause you to fall into that which is forbidden, or cause you to abandon that which is obligatory. I have prayed istikharah about a certain matter but I am still uncertain how to proceed. What should I do? You can repeat your istikharah along with consulting people of pure hearts and insight. My lower self (nafs) has got the better of me and I feel I cannot defeat it. What should I do? Your lower self may have got the better of you temporarily but you can defeat it. Neither the lower self nor anything else can be a barrier to the one who seeks strength from the All Powerful. Imam al-Haddad said: "I go against my lower self and the Devil through the power of Most High, the Most Great' Were man not able to overcome his lower self, Allah would not have commanded him to purify it and strive against it. No matter how much it overcomes do you, do not think that it will defeat you. Rely upon Allah and you will get the better of it. What is meant by fighting against the nafs? When scholars talk about fighting against the nafs (lower self) this is not meant literally. Harming the nafs is not what is intended. What is meant is puritying it and elevating it.
