We finally gave the fly tying studio the overhaul we've been talking about for years, and it feels so good to be making things in here. There's still some organizing to do (and an alarming amount of materials to find homes for), but it's finally starting to feel like our space. And the reading corner already has its first resident - our friend Lucas Utrera's beautiful new book, The Art of the Trout Fly. It's an incredible collection of flies and photography, and an amazing source of inspiration. We've got a lot we want to share from this room. I was back at it again this week with a freestyle salmon fly I’m calling Etude No. 2. This was a study for me on married wings (I’ve tried them only once before) and I am completely enamored with the process! I was really happy with the look of the Whiting Farms rooster hackle once palmered - it’s dark center blended beautifully into a spiral of @Fulling_Mill CDC dubbing - one of my favorite dubbings I’ve tried to date!

Perfect? No. Humbling and rewarding? Yesssssssssssssss.

It's a woolly bugger with - quite literally - a twist! As it turns out, flash looks fun spun up like yarn and gives the woolly bugger body a sparkly, segmented look! To make things even more interesting, this is an articulated bugger (and a large one at that) with two hooks connected via trailer wire. That feature, along with the wire reinforcement rib on each segment presented the perfect opportunity to use Renomed's BRAND NEW Wirecutters! Folk, these things are awesome! Upon observation, my son determined that this fly resembled an alien and I granted him naming rights. The second and third runners up if you’re wondering were ‘UFO - Unidentified Fish Object’ and ‘Extra Fishcatchstrial’. Since I could barely even say that last one, ‘Matuka 51’ it is. You’re welcome. 👽 Wondering about the ‘Matuka’ part? Originating in New Zealand, Matuka-style flies secure the feather to the hook shank with a wire rib wrapped down its length, creating a slim, durable profile. ‘Matuka’ is really a fly style, not a particular fly pattern, and there’s tons of room for creativity! I highly recommend giving one a go! 

I got weird and layered grizzly hackle feathers behind Whiting Farms Coq de Leon hen feathers for an organic, striped peek-a-boo moment. The Coq de Leon feathers are so versatile and take dye so beautifully - I’m smitten! Instead of wire, I wrapped the feathers down with a perfectly uniform Whiting Farms Pro Grade midge saddle hackle feather for a stimulating twist and then finished the body with a rib of oval tinsel. 🐛 Ok, let's address the elephant in the room: Monarch caterpillars feed exclusively on milkweed plants, which contain toxic chemicals called cardenolides that make the caterpillars unpalatable to most vertebrates and primarily deter a wide range of potential predators. But here's the thing - my son asked for a monarch caterpillar like the ones in our garden and a mom's gotta mom, ya know? That said, the sky is the limit with these Fulling Mill rubber legs - make any color combination you want for a tasty caterpillar fish treat! Need a lengthwise pattern? It was with much enthusiasm (and a bit of trepidation) that I dipped my toes into classic salmon fly dressing this week. This is my second tie in this style and I'm quite literally hooked, though I have plenty to learn. This was a freestyle tie that I called Etude No. 1 to denote its function as an exercise in technique. Working with such gorgeous (and, at times, temperamental) materials can be daunting, but having my Renomed scissors and tweezers on hand was a serious confidence boost. Beautiful tools that are as precise as they are elegant. I fully expect and welcome constructive criticism from the experienced classic salmon fly tyers out there. I absolutely love this style of tying and would love any recommendations you may have for materials and sourcing them responsibly. A note: I reversed the curve of the golden pheasant crest topping so that the fibers splayed outward on a whim and the result made me smile so I stuck with it.
