ā€¼ļø Episode Out Now ā€¼ļø Access to Work is such an important resource for deaf and disabled people to use in order to be able to do our jobs without worrying about access. Unfortunately, many deaf and disabled people are facing challenges with Access to Work. This is affecting so many of us, day in and day out. There’s a few things you can do if you want to share your views and opinions on Access to Work. āž”ļø Write to your MP or attend their surgery. Find out who your local MP is if you don’t already know, tell them about the problems with Access to Work and what needs to change. āž”ļøRespond to the Government’s Pathways to Work consultation. You can do this directly on the Government website, or if you’d rather do a collective response. You can fill out @accesstoworkcollective multi choice survey (note: this is not accessible in BSL). We already know that mental health support as a whole is really poor. There are very few spaces in which Deaf people can tap into and you can already imagine the strain on organisations, professionals, and Deaf people. Once you factor in intersectionality and other aspects, the concept of being supported fully becomes almost unfathomable. When an issue is not a one-off, an isolated instance, and is embedded into your everyday routine regardless of what life seems like for you, it’s easy to become weary. This is not to say that people don’t like monotony or a rigid routine, it’s what comes with it. The lack of access; the lack of support; the lack of understanding. The fatigue, the loneliness, the conformity, the frustration. Something that others would see as insignificant because of their ignorance can snowball into a whole bigger thing where health is impacted in different ways, where other aspects of life are impacted. This episode did bring forward a lot of emotions for the both of us when we discussed this topic. People do not realise all the ways in which society disables Deaf people, in turn making deafness seem like the issue, and in turn affecting entire communities of Deaf people in various ways which impacts mental health, physical health, relationships, finances, social interactions, and much more. Most Deaf people are just living to exist. Full Episode Out Now! You can find us on YouTube and Spotify (:. Disclaimer: Rose deserves her flowers and has been doing exceedingly well, and is rightfully a role model for many within the Deaf community in the UK. When it comes to discussing representation, especially for Deaf people, it isn’t as black and white (no pun intended) as it’s portrayed in the media. Sometimes, we need to take a step back and realise that certain figures will always be pushed much more in the mainstream media than others and that doesn’t always just boil down to race! It can also be elements of gender, sexuality, size, and many other factors. It can be hard for many to accept those that are being dubbed as the face of their community when there isn’t any other common ground to share aside from the deafness. It’s always interesting to see how differently Deaf people are supported and celebrated when it boils down to race {and other factors such as gender, size, etc} as well as how frequently specific Deaf people are spotlighted as a role model over others within the same industry. Moreover, it’s very telling when we see a lot of characters being platformed when, matter of fact, they shouldn’t be - and yet they continue to be labelled as a role model which sends out the wrong message! Disclaimer: The people named in this video deserve their flowers and were only named to highlight an example! When it comes to representation of Deaf people, especially in the media, we don’t think there’s always an accurate depiction. Often, the media representation panders to hearing audiences or feeds in stereotypes. We also have to be mindful as to who we champion as our role models within the community as we don’t always know what’s happening behind the scenes. caption this 🤣 Video Description: @Kirsty Jade✨, a white Deaf woman with a red buzzcut wears an ecru t shirt that has the phrase ā€œmixed emotionsā€ across the top half of the chest. The ā€œoā€ in emotions is an orange smiley face. She sits on her knees, dancing to the audio and lipsyncing. @Sarah x, a Black Deaf woman with a black slick curly ponytail and a red ribbon, wears an ecru t-shirt with Mickey Mouse on it. She has silver ribbon earrings on. She stands and wobbles her knees before coming close to the camera to act angry as she lip syncs. #sociallysound #fyp #funny
