“What is this land, America?" the song asks. "American Land" answers with a whistle-stop journey through arrivals, labor and communities that took root and flourished over generations, drawing on folk traditions to celebrate the immigrant experience and the making of a shared American life. This Labor Day, here's to the people whose work, hopes and dreams continue to make that life possible.

"I’m on Fire" was the fourth single from "Born in the U.S.A." and reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in April 1985. It remains one of Bruce’s most popular streaming titles, 41 years after its initial success, and continues to find its way to new generations of listeners.

On this day in 2000, nearing the end of the Reunion Tour, "American Skin (41 Shots)" debuted in Atlanta — and was famously performed throughout Bruce and the band's 10-show Madison Square Garden residency in New York City shortly after. Written in response to the tragic killing of Amadou Diallo, an innocent Guinean immigrant struck by 19 of 41 rounds fired by police who mistook his wallet for a gun outside his Bronx apartment, it has since been performed in dedication to other victims of brutality — including Trayvon Martin and George Floyd — and was a staple of the recent Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band Land of Hope and Dreams American Tour. 📸: Rob DeMartin

This International Workers’ Day, we on E Street recognize the strength and shared purpose of working people everywhere. Performed here live in Tampa on this day in 2014, songs like “Joe Hill” carry those stories forward — with voices raised and hands joined in a lasting tribute to those who keep the world moving.
