I’m a 54-year-old Gen X woman. Are you seriously asking why we have no chill? We were never allowed to be incompetent. And we’ve been paying for it ever since. 1. It started at 8. We were expected to be competent. Parents forgot food? You walked to the store with quarters you found in the sofa cushions. Fell off your bike without a helmet? Get some fresh air. 2. No one was driving us to Michaels at 10pm the night before a project to buy supplies. Also… there was no Michaels. You got really creative. My diorama of The Borrowers was a shoe box, aluminum foil, the cord I cut off an old lamp, and a bunch of unpopped kernels. 3. We were given no grace. I was fired from my first job at the soup shop for being late. Once. One time. And I would never say “That’s not fair,” because I got the “Life’s not fair” talk at 5. 4. Then we had kids. By then, putting a baby in a playpen was bad parenting. We did baby yoga and read to them. I think I read the equivalent of Tolstoy to my 6-month-old. 5. When our kids were teenagers, I was an on-call task rabbit. Could you bring my computer to school? Could you bring Starbucks when you pick me up? Could you buy me some socks? Could you bring my ID to work? 6. My children are in college. and starting there lives Motherhood is now a remote position. Amazon rerouting. Hulu passwords. Venmo requests. Emergency sock deliveries. Only now instead of a hug I get an emoji. 7. We arrange everyone’s healthcare, their doctor appointments, their rides to the doctor. Out Trips to the grocery store? Yes, 8. My passwords. My kids’ passwords. My husband’s passwords. Sometimes Our parents’ passwords. How did Gen X women become the keepers of everything 9. I can remember everyone’s dental appointments. I cannot remember the word for the human-sized napkin with strings that I tie on my body to cook. Apron. I Cannot remember the word apron. The next time someone asks why you have no chill, tell them it’s a privilege Gen X wasn’t granted. Gen X woman this is a place for you it’s your time We have found each other . Thanksgiving is triggering Gen X women because somewhere along the way, we stopped being guests at the holiday we loved and became responsible for making it magical for everyone else. 1. Thanksgiving used to be ONE DAY. Football, gluttony, stretchy pants, and a card table dragged up from the basement. Now we’re apparently supposed to run a 10K before breakfast, host a three-day celebration, and renovate the dining room. 2. We used to sit at the kids’ table. Paper tablecloth. Mismatched chairs. Absolutely no adult supervision. Now we’re responsible for the guest list, the groceries, the cooking, the cleaning, and finding somewhere for the three extra people our college kids invited home. 3. Somewhere along the way, Thanksgiving became a competitive sport. Are you running the Turkey Trot? Did you iron the napkins? Did you remember the seasonal hand towels? Are there Thanksgiving-themed sheets on the guest beds? WHO IS THIS FOR? 4. And here’s the part that really gets me. We’re so busy trying to recreate the holidays we remember that sometimes we forget what actually made them special. 5. Because the people around the table have changed. I don’t remember whether my mother ironed the napkins. I remember her sitting on the left-hand side of the table making fun of whatever ridiculous recipe I’d tried. I remember my father stealing the skin off the turkey. And I’d give anything to have them both sitting there again. 6. No one will remember if the turkey was dry. No one will remember whether you had matching plates or a beautiful centerpiece. They’ll remember who was there. And someday, they’ll miss those people more than anything. It doesn’t matter what’s on the table. It matters who’s seated around it. Send this to a Gen X woman who needs permission to enjoy Thanksgiving instead of managing it.
